Barcelona Compilation

Food:

  1. Paella - My favorite dish in the world, the seafood kind is the best, the squid ink kind is fantastic and different, and I've heard the soupy paella is also great.
  2. Tortilla de Patatas - Classic eggs with potato omelette, can be served hot or cold, both are delicious.
  3. Croquetas - MUCH better than the Cuban knockoffs, try the jamon, potato, chicken and (my favorite) fish kinds. Amazing.
  4. Churros with melted chocolate - Again much better than the Mexican knockoffs.
  5. Jamon and Fuet - The charcuterie in general is great, but these are special.
  6. Pan con Tomate - Simple but delicious snack, try it with my favorite cheese, manchego.
  7. Calcots - Huge charred green onions with nut sauce, with a side of BBQ. If it is in season, you have to try it. Usually have to go out of the city and its a half-day thing. Totally worth it.
  8. Angulas - Baby eel dish. If it is in season, definitely try it!
  9. Orchata - The Spanish variety is made with the real stuff (tigernuts) and not rice. Multiple ballparks better. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horchata)

Restaurants:

  • Cal Pep
    • Our favorite restaurant. They have very strict hours and there is always a line. You have to sit at the bar, its the best. The guy is an absolute character. Ask him about "the Armenians" who used to go to his restaurants if you're feeling up for it. But I highly recommend talking to him.
  • AGUA
    • A very good place to eat Paella, Arroz Negro and fish.
  • La Cañota
    • Octopus, eggs with chorizo, gaspatxo, crema catalan! (Near CCCB & BMCA museums)
    • Souren didn't likei it. Too greasy :P
  • Restaurant Fragments (placa de la Concordia)
    • Very good catalan cousine
  • Pastelerias Mauri
    • My mom likes this cafe for little sandwiches, excellent coffee and deserts, typical Barcelona ladies meeting there for a morning coffee and chat.
  • Rambla de Cataluna
    • Our favorite breakfast place.
  • El National
  • Can Mano
    • Fish restaurant, amazing food, no reservations, long queue.
  • El Vaso de Oro
    • Great tapa spot.
  • Federal
    • Sunday brunch/breakfast place or chill cafe during the day (food isn't very spanish)
  • Ciudad condal
    • Nice tapas place on Rambla de Catalunya
  • El tío che
    • Orchata

To Do

  1. Gaudi Stuff - Gaudi Pedrera, go up to the roof and visit the store too and the cafe on the first floor. Cafe con leche, manchego, pan con tomate bocadillo y fuet, tortilla de patatas are typical amazing breakfast meals. Park Guell: We used to enter from the top (there are open air escalators, you can find them on a map), enter the park from the top an walk down. Amazing Barcelona city views and the urban fabric. Spent most of my childhood here. La Sagrada Familia. Classic touristy architecture. Not crazy about it, but definitely worth seeing and judging for yourself. An (the?) icon of Barcelona.
  2. Mercat de Santa Caterina - Food market with great architecture and nice restaurants.
  3. Pay attention to the sidewalk tiles, specially the Paseo de Garcia ones by Gaudi.
  4. Mercat Del Born - Used to be a market, now a free accessible archeological site, very nicely presented. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g187497-d4943737-Reviews-Mercat_del_Born-Barcelona_Catalonia.htm
  5. Walk as much as you can in the old city, The streets are very nice and try to find all the 'plazas'. My moms favorite one is "plaza sant felip Neri" it's very peaceful.
  6. Santa Maria del Mar church and the entire neighbourhood around it called El Born is really cool.
  7. Hang out at passeig de gracia, the main street, and go to plenty of museums. The night life is also crazy, so definitely take advantage of that.
  8. Artticket
  • 30€ pass for
  • The Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB)
  • Fundació Antoni Tàpies
  • Fundació Joan Miró
  • Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA)
  • Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya
  • Museu Picasso
  1. Casa Batlloó

Shopping

  1. Vincon - My mom's favorite store. Go to the second floor and try to get to the balcony to get a view of an authentic 'interior de manzana.'
  2. Pilma - Another cool store, walking distance from Vincon.
  3. El Corte Ingles - Cool, popular department store. Cafeteria on the top floor offers chocolate caliente con churros, great snack for a cold day, great view of the plaza.
  4. Torron stores are all around when the weather gets cold, very authentic and delicious.
