How does --all-files get invoked?

Also, I think you can replace "git status --porcelain" with the command below, and then drop the regex.

git diff --cached --name-only --diff-filter=ACM

It would be better to use --all instead of -u in the following line
subprocess.call(['git', 'stash', '-u', '--keep-index'], stdout=subprocess.PIPE)
Your version deletes ignored files and recreates ones which were deleted from the working tree.
