Installing Debian/GNU Linux on HP Elitebook 820 G1 laptop in UEFI Native (without CSM)

Issue

It seems that some HP laptops have a graphics issue with UEFI Native (Without CSM) mode and Debian.

Prerequisites

  • Installation Media of Debian (I tested with Debian 9 Stretch)
  • External Display (I tested with Display Port. VGA not tested)
  • Turn off SecureBoot

Procedure:

  1. Connect an external display via Display Port.
  2. Turn on the PC and close the lid.
  3. If you see the splash screen (HP logo) on the display, open the lid and press F9.
  4. Continue to the installation process.

Not solved

  • No system error after the HP logo.
  • The system installed still suffers from the glitch.
    • When you troubleshoot or use an encrypted root, it can be a problem.
    • However, you can type the disk password and start using the system.
    • Installing Plymouth might solve the problem. (UPDATE 2019-02-17)

Other workarounds

  • Use UEFI Hybrid (with CSM) OR Legacy
  • Use Ubuntu
