Conference good practices according to Steph!
  • Have a Code of Conduct and a demonstrable commitment to diversity
    • The Code of Conduct must be prominently displayed
    • Sponsors and other third parties must adhere to the Code of Conduct
  • Provide a mechanism for low income attendees to get reduced prices and support where the event charges more than a day's income
  • Attendees encounter only non-defaulted opt-ins to marketing and future contact, especially from third parties
  • The data entrusted to the event is handled with due care and consideration
  • Diverse attendees' needs are considered and taken into consideration. Things like (but not limited to) large print agendas, gender neutral bathrooms, quiet rooms, family rooms, and prayer rooms are implemented to ensure a pleasant experience for all attendee
  • Volunteers and organisers should receive reduced or free entry to the event
  • New speakers are encouraged and offered extra support
  • The speaker selection process is performed in a way that reduces possible sources of bias
  • Speakers do not confer ownership of their materials in any way to the event
    • Speakers should use their own slide decks and devices
    • Speakers should specifically opt-in to various publication methods of their materials and have the right to request materials be removed
  • Speakers must be able to present without incurring any direct conference costs
    • Speakers must not be required to buy a conference ticket
    • The event is not pay-to-play
    • Speakers must be able to attend for at least the day they are presenting for free
  • There is a published travel and expenses policy where the event charges more than three day's income
    • The T&E policy should apply to all speakers equally
    • Local transport costs and childcare costs should be covered where possible to lower the barriers for local speakers

* A day's income is 8 hours at the local minimum wage

"Speakers hsould use their own slide decks and devices" - should.

Excellent points, if more of these were put into practice in sure you'd have more speakers doing things. (Especially like the childcare cost idea, childcare costs can hinder people for daily things never mind events).

yeah - just noticed and changed!

I believe these would result in a far more diverse range of attendees and speakers and I think everyone would be the better off for it :)
