Description

OpenTelemetry is a new project under the CNCF banner where the OpenCensus and OpenTracing communities have come together to build a unified API for instrumenting applications for collecting both metrics and trace events. Providing backwards compatability with both the existing APIs should provide an easy migration path and avoid the pitfalls of becoming just another competing standard in the instrumentation space. There is broad vendor support coming from both the APM and distributed-tracing/observability segments.
