I think you need to add extern char *optarg; in getopt.h as well to get that portion of the getopt interface to work.

Actually, according to how http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/functions/getopt.html describe the functionality, the header should look like this, perhaps optreset not but I guess it doesn't hurt to have it there:
