About the author

Ogden Nash began his working life as a schoolteacher. He eventually wrote over 500 comic verse poems, famously remarking "I'd rather be a great bad poet than a good bad poet."

Nash also wrote lyrics for the popular Broadway musical One Touch of Venus - including hit song "Speak Low" with composer Kurt Weill. It was later made into a movie starring Ava Gardner.

He wrote lyrics for several Broadway flops with composer Vernon Duke (who had at least had this going for him).

For at least one of the above reasons, Nash has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The city of Nashville, TN is thought to be named after Nash's ancestor, General Francis Nash, who died in the American revolutionary war in 1777. Other possibilities for the naming of Nashville are considered here.

Ogden didn't die in a war. He died of heart failure.

That reminds me - Ogden Nash lived August 19, 1902 – May 19, 1971. Hope you weren't looking forward to meeting him or anything.

About this poem

Animated sitcom King of the Hill features this poem in Season 2, episode 9, "The Company Man." Peggy Hill recites the poem to a businessman's wife and forms a fast friendship.

Members of the family Bovidae (subfamily Bovinae) are in the cow's close family circle. Some other members of the bovine ilk include

the water buffalo, whose milk is the main ingredient in prized buffalo mozzarella.

the African buffalo - the cause of over 200 goring deaths per year, it is not known to give up any milk freely.
