As a teenager I started writing a sci-fi story that I never finished. I was playing around with ChatGPT and decided to explain the plot to it and ask me to write the story. 15mins of edits and I've got my childhood story completed!

A gift of life

As the inhabitants of the planet gazed out at the endless expanse of space from the windows of their spaceship, they knew that their time on their home planet has come to an end. The planet was undergoing a catastrophic mass extinction event, the oceans were boiling, the atmosphere was thinning, and there was no way for the inhabitants to survive.

But, as all live things do, they were not willing to give up just yet. A group of scientists and engineers had been working on a plan to evacuate the remnants of the population using a massive spaceship that was capable of transporting thousands of people to a nearby planet, that, with some help from light terraforming, could become habitable.

After months of preparation, the spaceship was ready to launch. The inhabitants crowded onto the ship, their hearts filled with hope and fear. They knew that the journey would be long and dangerous, but they were determined to make it to their new home.

As the ship blasted off into space, the inhabitants watched as their planet disappeared behind them. They were leaving behind everything they had ever known, but they were filled with excitement at the thought of starting a new life on a new planet.

But their excitement quickly turned to worry as they realized that their spaceship's landing gear had malfunctioned. The ship was unable to land on the planet's surface, and the inhabitants were left with a difficult decision.

They could either remain in orbit around the planet for the rest of their lives, living in the cramped confines of the spaceship and never setting foot on their new home. Or they could attempt to build a smaller lander ship that could deliver biosamples to the planet's surface, allowing them to seed the planet with life. However, the lander ship required parts from the spaceship's life support systems, meaning the vessel keeping them alive would fail in months rather than a lifetime.

After much debate and deliberation, the inhabitants decided to go with the latter option. They set to work, using the resources on board the spaceship to build a small lander ship that could make the perilous journey to the planet's surface.

Despite the challenges and setbacks, the inhabitants were determined to succeed. And after many long months of hard work, their lander ship was finally ready to launch. Packed with plant seeds, bacteria and other single-cell organisms that were meant to terraform the planet for their offspring was now the only representative of a once great civilisation.

As the lander ship touched down on the planet's surface, the inhabitants watched with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. They had no idea whether their biosamples would be able to survive in the harsh environment, and if so, what kind of life would sprout from it millions of years in the future. And even though the life support systems were already starting to fail, the Martians knew that the sacrifice they're making was a rightful one, giving their once promised salvation planet Earth a gift of new life.
