For those who do not want to dig into low level and is looking for something that "just works" here's a blog post RabbitMQ delayed messaging

If you are using one of enqueue/amqp-ext, enqueue/amqp-lib, enqueue/amqp-bunny you can do it this way:

  • Install the lib:
$ composer req enqueue/amqp-lib

Run the code:

<?php

use Enqueue\AmqpLib\AmqpConnectionFactory;
use Enqueue\AmqpTools\RabbitMqDelayPluginDelayStrategy;
use Enqueue\AmqpTools\RabbitMqDlxDelayStrategy;

$factory = new AmqpConnectionFactory('amqp://guest:guest@localhost:5672/%2F');
$factory->setDelayStrategy(new RabbitMqDelayPluginDelayStrategy());
// or
//$factory->setDelayStrategy(new RabbitMqDlxDelayStrategy());

$context = $factory->createContext();

$queue = $context->createQueue('a_queue_name');
$message = $context->createMessage('a body');

$context->createProducer()
    ->setDelayStrategy(5000) // 5 sec

    ->send($queue, $message)
;
