<h2>Talk, 'From drawing room Socialism to the Popular Front: Margot Heinemann 1933-36'</h2>
<p>Hosted by the <b>Working Class Movement Library</b></p>

<p>Margot Heinemann may be known to you as the inspiration for John Cornford's famous poem, ‘Heart of the Heartless World', for her work on the coal industry, or as a historian of the 1930s or of seventeenth century theatre. Margot did not have a planned career as such but a series of interesting jobs, largely in the service of the working class movement.
<p>Three significant events shaped Margot Heinemann's decision to join the Communist Party in October 1934: the Armistice Day riots of 1933, the arrival of the second National Hunger March in Cambridge early in 1934, and the huge anti-fascist demonstration in September of that year. Margot took a year to think her way from her parents' Fabian "drawing room Socialism" towards something more revolutionary. Jane Bernal, Margot's daughter, who is working on her biography, will talk about Margot's life between 1934 and 1936, and discuss changes in the Cambridge student Communist Party and peace movement during that period.

	<p>Working Class Movement Library, Salford M3 4EN<p>

	<p>Three significant events shaped Margot Heinemann's decision to join the Communist Party in October 1934: the Armistice Day riots of 1933, the arrival of the second National Hunger March in Cambridge early in 1934, and the huge anti-fascist demonstration in September of that year. Margot took a year to think her way from her parents' Fabian "drawing room Socialism" towards something more revolutionary. Jane Bernal, Margot's daughter, who is working on her biography, will talk about Margot's life between 1934 and 1936, and discuss changes in the Cambridge student Communist Party and peace movement during that period.</p>
