Fly UK Flying Club: SEP Rating Tour - Leg 1

EGCJ - EGNW (71nm, 01:15h)

Preflight

In the hazy morning of the 4th of March I prepared my old J-3 Cub for the first leg of the SEP Rating Tour, from Sherburn in Elmet to Wickenby.

During the planning I decided to take a longer scenic route, staying clear of the Doncaster TMA. The plan is to fly initially SE, crossing over the Drax Power Station, then turn East, follow the River Ouse to its delta, make a TNG at Brough (EGNB), then turn south along the coast, past Immingham and Grimsby, then another TNG at North Coates and then continue inalnd to the West for the last 17nm stretch to EGNW.

Altitude of 1000-1500ft was anticipated for the entire flight. Weather was mostly clear with slight haze at EGCJ, clear over the coast and then a bit more haze at EGNW (visibility 4700m). Temperatures were slightly above freezing ranging between 0-2 degrees.

The planned route map:

At runway 01, EGCJ, warming up the Continental engine before takeoff:

Approaching and overflying Drax power station:

A windmill cluster just west of Drax village:

Along the river Ouse; Ouse bridge:

Passing between 2 telecommunication towers: Yokefleet on the left and Ousefleet on the right:

Entering the Ouse delta. Whitton Sand on the left:

First glimpse of Brough airport (EGNB). At this time, I noticed my airpeed indicator droping to zero, an indication of pitot icing (no pitot heaters on the Cub). After the toucn and go, at low altitudes and thanks to the mild weather along the coast there were no more icing issues.

On final EGNB:

Touch and go EGNB:

Continue East; overflying Humber bridge:

Turning South; passing Immingham container port on the right:

Passing Grimsby Dock Tower:

Approaching North Coates airfield (EG0E). On right base for rwy 23:

On final EG0E:

Toucn and go EG0E:

Climbing out to the West for the last 17nm stretch to Wickenby:

Crossing the A16 motorway: one of the few landmarks for this segment:

Passing the Belmont telecommunication tower:

Wickenby in sight, despite the dropping visibility:

An ovehead join, before turning on a left downwind for rwy 03:

Turning final rwy 03:

On final:

Rolling out:

Taxiing in:

Aicraft parked and secured:
