A little gist to share How I Work with my fellow wonderful humans @ Human Made.
I live in the New Zealand Timezone: +12 or +13 UTC and typically work from 9am - 5pm. I am typically available later on NZ tuesday/wednesday/thursday for syncing with IST, WIT or UK timezones.
I aim for a 40 hour work week spread evenly across the board and find monday and friday are better focus days for me.
No work weekends, unless arranged earlier.
I work from home in a smallish converted garage which I share with my wife. So from time to time I'll be either at my desk in the lounge, or upstairs from the second desk - depends on how well I negotiate taking up the lounge for calls after hours.
Our internet is rural and sometimes sporadic, but the value from walking outside and enjoying 7 acres of rural farmland makes it worth the price of admission.
I have a split role of engineering manager and engineer. So a typical day is split between 1:1, regional and project calls and focus time in between. Starting around 9-10am I'll spend the morning on focus time and calls in the afternoon.
I am responsible to our team of APAC engineers, fellow engineering managers and some members of leadership regularly and provide feedback on code reviews, project team members and my engineers.
- Slack (DM or mentions)
- Issues and Updates (GH or P2)
- Emails
- Slack scrollback: Unless mentioned, or im actively apart of a conversation - I only skim read scrollback (except #general, thats abandonware).
I love yarning on voice or video calls and because my timezone rarely supports x-regional sync calls, async is my jam.
All feedback isn't created equally. I've learned to acknowledge all feedback given to me (I love it!) but am encourage myself and others to be autonomous as to which feedback I prioritise and work on at any given time.
If you give feedback and don't see the change you're suggesting, its not because Im ignoring it - it's because I personally have other parts of myself that I want to improve and have prioritised.
I have a bunch of empathy towards humans, so if I'll probably reach out to you about your feedback and let you know what my plan is so you its clear where the progression is.
The most useful feedback to me explains your context as well as highlights the area for improvement, so I can grow my awareness as well as improve on direct feedback.
Timezones and procrastination. I definitely have a procrastination monkey which constantly gets attention.
- Humans. Generally the coolest things I learn are from those I work with.
- Rising tide philosophy. Do better, not just for us, but for errrybody.
- Gaming. When in doubt, live life as a ninja or a cyberpunk.
Im the eldest of nine siblings. However, we have 3 step siblings too! Married my best friend who is the strongest human I know.
