Notes on using Docker on ARM Macs (November 2021)

Docker for Mac

On M1 machines, Docker for Mac is running a lightweight linux ARM VM, then running containers within that, so containers are essentially running natively. Don't be fooled by the fact the UI or binary CLI tools (e.g. docker) might require Rosetta.

Within that VM is an emulation layer called QEmu. This can be used by docker to run Intel containers. This does not use Rosetta at all, and has a roughly 5-6X performance penalty. (If you just upgraded your CPU this may result in a similar performance to your old machine!)

Pulling and running with Docker

Many images in public registries are multi-architecture. For instance at the time of writing on Docker Hub the php:8.0-cli image has the following digests:

Tips for getting on the Advent of Code leaderboard

Hi, I'm mcpower. I've done Advent of Code seriously for two years now in Python, placing 9th in 2018 and 12th in 2017. This year, I'm taking a break from aiming for the leaderboard - while it's fun and all, it is a bit stressful at times (the good kind of stress, though!). As such, I'd like to share a few tips for anyone wanting to aim for the leaderboard.

This is everything that worked for me. Your mileage may vary, though - don't take this as gospel, see what works for you.

"You got your markdown in my shell script!" "No, you got your shell script in my markdown!"

Mixed Markdown and Shell Scripting

: By the power of this magic string: ex: set ft=markdown ;:<<'```shell' #, this file is now both a markdown document and an executable shell script. chmod +x it and try running it!

The above line does just what it says. More specifically, when placed within in the first 5 lines and preceded only by blank lines or #-prefixed markdown headers:

  1. The first part of the magic string makes github and various editors (e.g. atom with the vim-modeline packge) treat the file as having markdown syntax (even if the file doesn't have an extension)
  2. The second part (if run in a shell), makes the shell skip execution until it encounters the next ```shell block.

(The line also has to start with a : so that it's valid shell code.)
