Welcome to OpenStreetMap!

You have just joined an international volunteer organization whose goal is nothing less than a rich, detail map of the whole world that is open-source. What does that mean? It means that this is a map whose data is available to everyone for free.

OpenStreetMap is an important effort that will have impact around the globe. Millions who never have had access to geographical information now will have access togeographical information now will have access to a rich spectrum of map data that they can use in efforts that range from disaster relief to town planning to resource management to tourism.

OpenStreetMap already provides rich data in many parts of the world, but we still need to grow that map and make it a premier source of geodata. That’s why OpenStreetMap needs you. By adding data to the map, you will be helping to build a resource that can be used around the globe by everyone.

You can choose to map in many different ways. If you are completely new to mapping, we have tools, such as iD, that will help you map the streets and resources (such as banks, schools, restaurants) of your neighborhood. If you are an experienced mapper or geodata specialist, we have sophisticated tools, such as JOSM (Java OpenStreetMap) to help you use your expertise to make major contributions to OpenStreetMap. No matter whether you are a beginner or an expert, OpenStreetMap needs you, and we are proud to have you as a member.

And, we can help with whatever kind of mapping you want to do. --If you are a beginner, we recommend using iD, our mapping tool for those new to mapmaking. --Also for beginners is the Newbies mailing list. You can join Newbies at _______________________________________ --If you have some experience with map data and want to use JOSM, our more-sophisticated editing tool, check out http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Beginners%27_guide or http://www.learnosm.org. If you begin mapping with iD and later want to graduate to JOSM, these tools can help you make the transition.

No matter how you want to map, we want to encourage and help you. If you feel lost. contact one of the experienced mappers answering questions on Newbies or post your own question. No question is too simple, and we'll do our best to answer. In addition, OSM is developing a mentoring program, so you can get personal help from experienced mappers right in your area. Stay tuned for this exciting addition to OpenStreetMap's program. Meanwhile, just have fun mapping!
