We are Riz's extended family. At the moment, Riz is doing well. We hope that he recovers soon. Amen.
We would like to explain what Riz has been going through for the past few years.
Riz worked as a high school instructor/teacher in animation from 2015. He loved his job as he loved imparting knowledge. Riz also worked as a freelance artist.
For Riz, sharing knowledge gave his life meaning. His life was great since then, until the end of 2015 when he was approached by two people who claimed to be from the police. Like it or not, he had to get into their car.
In the car, they told Riz, "Don't bullshit/cause trouble. Your kind ruin everything. Watch out, we're going to take action!"
Riz initially felt no fear as he did not think it was serious (viewed it as just intimidation).
In early 2016, Indonesian authorities began to openly show signs of intolerance and anti-LGBT sentiment. This was when Riz started to look for a way out, with his partner.
At the end of that year, Riz had to move out as people were invading his privacy (direct translation: people were coming to his house and looking in).
Everything was fine until mid-2017, when people approached Riz and threatened to report him to the authorities. If the school where Riz taught had been found to have employed someone like Riz, Riz was worried that it might affect the school's accreditation, or even be threatened with closure.
For the sake of the school and his students, Riz resigned. Since then, he has been relying on his Patreon. To be honest, he was uneasy using Patreon as he did not want to continue "begging" (this is a literal translation, and there is some social/cultural stigma about income via methods like Patreon, Ko.fi etc. in SE Asia).
He only kept it up to earn money for his mother.
In November 2017, his new home was again approached by unknown persons and he had to move again. Riz became increasingly paranoid.
In early 2018, Riz's mother was hospitalized for cancer, causing Riz to fall deeper into depression. At this point in time, Riz and his friends began looking for a way out of the country.
Riz and his friends decided to set up a gofundme page.
Riz's increasingly unstable condition caused anger/upset amongst many friends who had wanted to help him. The page's administration was eventually held by a friend in America.
Riz deliberately kept the existence of the page under wraps as he still wanted to find his own means of getting out. However, his mental state was deteriorating with each day as he could not find a full-time job and had to rely on Patreon.
Things became worse after Riz started hearing rumours about LGBT arrests and anti-LGBT rallies.
In June this year, Riz used comics as a means to express his predicament. He felt better after his tweet was shared by @shoe0nhead.
However, not long after that, a friend of ours told Riz that there were threats on Riz's home.
Initially Riz did not take it seriously as he thought it was a joke. We tried to contact that friend but he said this time it was serious.
Riz then had a breakdown.
Riz's parents tried to ease his mind. He looked calm after that. Riz's parents then went out to get some food. When they got home, Riz was having a seizure and had foam coming from his mouth.
Riz had drunk detergent. We took him to the hospital and called his closest friends to let them know.
We just found out that Riz mentioned this on Twitter and we asked friends/relatives to DM whoever had RT'd Riz at the time of the incident. (I'm sorry, this was slightly unclear to me)
Riz was conscious for a bit while the doctor was treating him ("mengeluarkan sisa racun" = take out the remaining poison; maybe implied stomach being pumped or other methods of extraction). The doctor said his condition would be serious if he had consumed a lot of it. We immediately informed (friends? relatives?) about this.
Riz's liver is inflamed and he has to be hospitalized for a bit.
We deeply apologize for not being able to share photos of Riz as we're worried about his safety, especially after the most recent threat.
We have tried to contact the American police before but it was ignored as Riz is not an American citizen.
We are very angry at those who have terrorized Riz and hurt him. We hope there will be justice.
Riz will be going to live with his extended family, away from the city and civilization.
We apologize if we have been lacking in any way, and we apologize on behalf of Riz if he has done anyone wrong. We thank everyone for their concern.
