Bowl of Cereal: The ‘Hello World’ of Cooking

Bowl of Cereal: The ‘Hello World’ of Cooking

For most people, the simple act of making a bowl of cereal is an easy one. These people can be placed in a stranger’s kitchen, and it will not be long before they will be sitting down to enjoy a nice bowl of Cookie Crisp. However, there are some people who have never had a bowl of cereal. If they are asked to make a bowl of cereal, they will return a blank stare. If that sounds like you, this is the guide to get you on your way.

1. Head to the kitchen

Most of the food preparation happens in the kitchen. Making a bowl of cereal is no different. All of the tools we need are in this tidy little room.

2. Grab your bowl and spoon

A bowl and a spoon are the first steps to enjoying your cereal. A bowl is the most popular dish to hold your cereal, but people have been known to use cups or Rubbermaid containers. All of them will get the job done, but we will focus on bowls. Now that we have our bowl and spoon, we have to make sure they are clean. It is not uncommon to grab them from the cupboard and still have some food stuck on them. Dishwashers are getting better but still are not a perfect machine. Now that we have a clean bowl and spoon, it is on to the next step.

3. Choose your cereal

This is really one of the most difficult choices because there are so many options! Do you want something healthy? Sugary? What about marshmallows? Is there a prize waiting for you at the bottom? Once you make your choice, fill up your bowl but not all the way. If you put too much cereal in your bowl, it will be forced out when we add the milk. Go ahead and have a nibble of the cereal to make sure it is not stale.

4. Let’s add some milk

We are almost done making our bowl of cereal. The final ingredient is the delicious milk. There are a few options here. You can use regular milk from a cow (or goat). There are also milk alternatives such as soy or almond milk. If you go with one of the alternatives, be careful about using a sweetened version. If you have a sugary cereal, it can taste too sweet and not be any good. Now before you pour the milk, be sure to check the expiration date and give it a sniff to make sure it is not spoiled. Nothing ruins a bowl of cereal like pouring on sour milk!

5. Time to eat

You did it! You have made your first bowl of cereal. Great job! Do not let this stop you on your cooking journey. Keep building your skills. Today you made a bowl of cereal. Tomorrow you could be making a gourmet, five course meal.
