<p>I heard him ask the staff in polite English where to find Pfeffernüsse.</p>

<p>She gestured without really answering, dismissing him because she didn’t understand the question.</p>

<p>He understood as her reply as saying they were on the top floor, and said to himself, lamenting, “I don’t have time for that.”</p>

<p>I spotted the Pfeffernüsse just in time. He was about to leave the store when I tapped his shoulder. As I handed them over I explained I heard he was looking for them. I began to walk away, but he chased after me, tapped my shoulder, shook my hand and asked my name.</p>

<p>“And where are you from, Tiffany? We’re from South Africa.”</p>

<p>“Canada, but I live here.”</p>

<p>“Our flight back is in an hour. I thought we didn’t have time to get these. Thank you!”</p>
