I heard him ask the staff in polite English where to find Pfeffernüsse.

She gestured without really answering, dismissing him because she didn’t understand the question.

He understood as her reply as saying they were on the top floor, and said to himself, lamenting, “I don’t have time for that.”

I spotted the Pfeffernüsse just in time. He was about to leave the store when I tapped his shoulder. As I handed them over I explained I heard he was looking for them. I began to walk away, but he chased after me, tapped my shoulder, shook my hand and asked my name.

“And where are you from, Tiffany? We’re from South Africa.”

“Canada, but I live here.”

“Our flight back is in an hour. I thought we didn’t have time to get these. Thank you!”
