swindon makerspace token doesn't let me in

So, you've put your token up to the reader, and the door doesn't open. Don't panic, most of the time there's a simple solution to be had, just try to answer the questions this poses. If you get stuck somewhere, go on telegram and tell us where.

  1. Are the ring of LEDs around the reader moving?

    • No: This means that the door hardware has hung, and needs to be rebooted. This happens occasionally, and isn't a huge deal. Proceed with 2.
    • Yes: All is right with the door hardware. Proceed from 5.
  2. Is there anyone in the space who can reboot the door hardware? Press the doorbell and /lookaround and ask on telegram.
If they don't know how to reboot the door, tell them to read 4.

  3. There's a secret way in for cases such as this. Go on telegram, and ask us how to use it.

  4. Just below the button you press to exit, there's a plastic box with the door electronics in it. On the top of that box, there's a little switch. Flip it to one side, wait a couple seconds, and then back to where it started. If you were welding recently, remember that you should check the door after welding.

  5. Did the door notice your rfid tag at all? If you present your tag to the door, and nothing happens, that means the reader didn't see any tags at all. Try pressing the tag closer to the reader. If it's in a wallet, try taking it out. If your tag is a sticker, it may have just failed. If you can't get the door to recognize the token at all, you are stuck, ask on telegram, and we might tell you to proceed from 2.

  6. If the LEDs change when you presented your tag, that means it has read the tag, or at least a tag. If there's another tag it might have read instead (perhaps an oyster card or bank card in your wallet?), then take your tag out of your wallet and try again.

  7. Depending on what colour the LEDs change to, and if they stay that way, various different things might be wrong. Normally the door will start on orange, then when it sees a tag, change to a brighter orange. It will ask the server if it should let you in, and when it recieves a reply, change colours again. The second colour changes depending on what the server said about your token.

  • Red: The server does not recognize this token.

  • Half orange, half red: The server told the door that you haven't paid. Proceed at 8.

  • FIXME: The server told the door that you are a weekend member, and it isn't the weekend.

  1. First off, have you actually paid? If you haven't, the door system is behaving exactly as it should. Start paying us again, and the door will start letting you in again. Proceed at FIXME.

  2. The bank transfer system in the UK isn't as fast as you might want it to be. It will take at least one "overnight" for the money to get from your bank to ours and our system to notice it. (Yes, even if your bank is the same as our bank, Barclays.) Depending on how the transfer is happening "behind the scenes", it might take several days, especially if weekends or bank holidays are some of those days.

  3. Did your payment have the correct "reference" set? If is didn't, money just appeared in our account, and we have no idea who sent it to us. Ask us on telegram, and a director can fix it up for this payment. (But please correct it with your bank before next payment.)
