SF v NYC

In a nutshell (rougly sorted in order of importance)

SF adv: culture:

  • strong general technology culture
  • better poly/kink scene
  • more casual, more weird
  • better burning culture
  • less art/finance/fashion nonsense other:
  • winter is fine; good weather, outdoor activities
  • easier to have a car or electric unicycle

NYC adv: culture:

  • much better crypto scene
  • better politics, less progressivism destroying the city
  • more gender balanced, easier dating
  • generally more to do, more going on
  • larger, more diverse, about 10x more people other:
  • cheaper: 8% lower cost-of-living in Brooklyn vs SF; ~2.5% lower income tax
  • easier to get to europe
  • less homeless/drug-addict problem
  • better public transit
  • gonna wanna leave in the winter (to go to SF? lol)

table that

Item SF NYC weight score SF score NYC
weirdness 1 .7 1 1 .7
subcultures (burn, poly, kink) 1 .7 .9 .9 .63
crypto/tech 1 1 .8 .8 .8
personal transport 1 1 .8 .8 .8
weather (leave in winter) 1 .5 .7 .7 .35
politics .5 1 .7 .35 .7
dating .3 1 .7 .21 .7
cost of living + taxes .9 1 .5 .45 .5
safety .6 1 .4 .24 .4
traveling convenience .6 1 .4 .24 .4
absense of antisubcultures 1 .5 .2 .2 .1

SF: 5.99 NYC: 6.08

That conclusion suggests they are so close in margin of error as to be indifferentiable, and does not account for a stability bias. Pending further evidence, I think I stay in SF, but it would be fun to occasionally stage periodic trips out to visit NYC and see the team for a couple weeks at a time.
