How to use PlantUML with Markdown

PlantUML is a really awesome way to create diagrams by writing code instead of drawing and dragging visual elements. Markdown is a really nice documentation tool.

Here's how I combine the two, to create docs with embedded diagrams.

Step 0: Setup

Get the command-line PlantUML from the download page or your relevant package manager.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp began to outpace Facebook messenger for user attention in 2013. Facebook craves user attention, so they bought WhatsApp in Feb 2014 for a lot of money (~$19 billion). It proceeded to be a runaway success in the late 2010s and is now installed on 2 billion user's phones, world-wide.

WhatsApp is a cash black hole

This costs Facebook money:

• electricity for servers that act as a switchboard
• people to run it all.
• the fact it also runs Facebook messenger as well
• in the early days they charged a ~£1 per year fee to users
