A short description of the LBW law in cricket

LBW is the commonly used acronym for Leg Before Wicket - one of the more common methods of dismissing the batsman in the game of cricket. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played on an oval field of play, about 100 yards long and 50 yards wide. In the middle of the field of play is the playing surface: a 22 yard long, five yard wide, rectangular piece of compacted, short-cut grass with 3 thin wooden poles stuck vertically into the ground at each end (the 'wicket'). A cricket team consists of 11 players per side. At any given time during the game, one player of the bowling team is delivering the ball from one end of the playing surface towards the wicket, which one player from the batting team is defending. The batter's aim is to hit the ball into space, either on or outisde the field of play, thereby counting one or more 'runs'.
