Chess - Piece Activity Resources

Activity of our pieces is a primary goal in chess, but newer players commit lots of mistakes around this theme. By GM Irina Krush

In this live stream video, I explain the concept of "active" and "passive" pieces. Under what circumstances a piece becomes passive, how to identify a passive piece, how to improve the position of passive pieces are explained with examples in this video. By GM RB Ramesh

One of the major strategic factors in chess is piece activity. Having active pieces on the board is a crucial advantage and can help you to attack the opponent's king or to get a material advantage. In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy is showing you the importance of active pieces and why it is important to have a good piece mobility and piece coordination. You will also learn what it means to have passive pieces and why this is a big disadvantage in a chess game. What did you learn in this video? Comparison between active and passive pieces, discussion of different cases of activity of the pieces. Activity is the most important condition to accomplish your goals. After watching the video, you should understand better how to activate your pieces. By IM Andrey Ostrovskiy

Coordinating the pieces, making them work together is harder than one might think. One of the keys to do that is to focus on advancing them by means of looking for threats, ways to attack your opponent. And the author of this course, IM Valeri Lilov, teaches how to do that by showing an illustrative example – a game played between Anatoly Karpov and Mark Taimanov in 1983. In this video, IM Valeri Lilov says “The secret to any position is not just making sure that you’re activating your pieces, but also about connecting them, coordinating them; the ability to have things working well by making your pieces work together.” So, there are actually 3 parameters here: 1. Piece Coordination 2. Space Advantage 3. Piece Activity. These 3 go hand in hand, and they complement each other very well. But how to do that? Watch the video lesson and learn! By M Valeri Lilov

“Help your pieces so they can help you”, said Paul Morphy. Today, we’re going to learn how to find the right, strong, active squares for your pieces. More specifically, we’ll see how to vacate or clear a square for your piece. By IM Asaf Givon

NM Dan Heisman defines activity and mobility and breaks mobility down into actual and potential mobility. Then, with the help of several instructive examlpes, he shows how to achieve/measure mobility, and how to differentiate mobility (objective) from activity (subjective). At the end of the video he throws in the concept of "space" and how it relates to mobility and activity. By NM Dan Heisman
