Social Media Guidelines for Open Source Devs

Be on social media AND protect project (and employer) interests

  1. Know your responsibility: Your content and conduct on the internet and social media is your responsibility. Adhere to applicable codes of conduct, laws, etc. Respect copyrights/trademarks. As a leader how you communicate matters as much as what.

  2. Be authentic, honest, transparent and respectful: Identify yourself, be polite and professional as you share your perspective.

  3. Protect community interests: Projects are made of code AND people AND many types of non-code artifacts too. Don't trash talk each other, or non-coder disciplines, or other projects. Safe spaces for early discussion may be useful, but too much community talk (especially decision making) in private, subsequently shared in publicly, may run counter to our ideals of inclusiveness and openness.

  4. Protect employer interests: Know the difference between community public and corporate private information and forums. Keep each in their respective places. Company talk in community may not be appropriate.

  5. Do share your passions: We are collaborating on large and exciting innovations every day and are forming the technological basis of a large industry. Share your excitement and also your frustrations. This lifts up your peers and colleages and our shared projects. Foster an environment of continuous sharing and learning!
