Hot sauces I like and would buy again

Iris Lune | Eclipse Hot Sauce ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Brooklyn alt-pop band Iris Lune (featuring HEATONIST's own Aaron Liao) teamed up with the Ontario hot sauce gurus at Dawson’s Hot Sauce for this peachy concoction. The heavier consistency and perfect blend of sweetness and mild heat make Eclipse great with salads, eggs, fried chicken, and even cheesecake. Enjoy while grooving out to Iris Lune’s equally spicy and flavorful music here: www.irislune.com

Ingredients: Peach, yellow pepper, vinegar, extra virgin, olive oil, garlic, sugar, Vietnamese red chili, salt.

My Notes

Sweet peach and a little heat. The decision to include peaches in this hot sauce is inspired. Good on everything, easy to use large amounts of it. It's cool that it's wax sealed, it makes it seem more bespoke and personalized.

Dawson's Hot Sauce | Big Smoke ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Loaded with pepper flavor, this sauce packs a flavorful punch. Look for the distinct tastes of Chipotle, Scotch Bonnet, Jalapeno and Red Sheppard, as well as fresh green chilis & spicy Vietnamese hots. This varied combination activates heat receptors all over the mouth making this sauce a unique tasting treat.

Ingredients: Chipotle pepper sauce, (chipotle peppers, tomate puree, vinegar, onions, sunflower seed oil, sugar, salt, paprika and garlic) vinegar, jalapeno pepper, red chili pepper, garlic, green chili pepper, extra virgin olive oil. sea salt, spices

My Notes

Smoky is good, not too hot. Has flecks of chili peppers or something in it. The presentation is also good, like Eclipse it's wax sealed which is impractical but cool. It is amazing with heavier food like rice and protein.

SPECIAL NOTE

Add this sauce to Sweet Baby Ray's. It's astounding. It creates a rich, complex flavor with notes that harmonize together beautifully.

Humble House | Ancho & Morita Hot Sauce ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⚫️

A new crowd favorite here at hot sauce HQ, the Humble House Ancho is a sauce that begs to be squeezed on everything. It's rich and smoky from the mild Morita pepper (a smoked red jalapeño) and slightly sweet from tamarind. This is a BBQ/hot sauce hybrid that works great on rice and beans and grilled meats. Or eggs. Or chicken. Or anything!

Ingredients: Aged tamarind chili paste (raisins, tamarind concentrate, gluten-free soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, Morita chile, ancho chile, kosher salt), vinegar, cane sugar, fresh garlic

My Notes

This sauce smells reminiscent of teriyaki. I made a mistake when first trying it and mixed a bunch of sauces so I couldn't pick out the individual flavors that well. That said, this does have a pretty strong vinegar taste so it almost feels like it should be a sauce for stir-fry or rice. It's intriguing so I'm looking forward to experimenting with it further.

Hellfire Hot Sauce | Devil’s Blend Roasted Reaper ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⚫️

Hellfire has been known for their horror-themed labels and super spicy recipes that lurk in the dark corners of more than one Hot Ones lineup. This time they’re back with toned down heat but dialed up flavor thanks to fire roasted jalapenos, tomatillos, granny smith apples, and a healthy portion of scallion. Gracing the number 4 seat in the Season 14 lineup, Devil’s Blend does add a devilish touch of roasted Reaper pepper heat but with notes of smoke, tartness and aromatic herbs. This award-winning recipe is sure to get celebrity guest and fans alike to sit up and take notice.

Ingredients: Fire roasted jalapeño pepper mash (jalapeno peppers and vinegar), distilled vinegar, tomatillos (tomatillos, water, citric acid and vinegar), Granny Smith apples, roasted garlic (garlic and water), scallion puree (scallions, salt), cilantro, green Carolina Reaper pepper mash (Carolina Reaper peppers and vinegar), sea salt, cumin, lime juice from concentrate

My Notes

Jalapeños and Carolina Reapers make this a more traditional, thinner hot sauce like you would find in Mexican cuisine. Not a strong combination with food. I don't think the Granny Smith comes through for me. Spices up salsa really well though.

Hot sauces I'm on the fence about

Dawson's Hot Sauce | Cedar Smoked Garlic ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⚫️

From our friendly neighbors to the north at Dawson’s Hot Sauce, this new smoked sauce is deliciously complex. It’s woods-y and peppery, with a hit of savory garlic. What can’t this sauce do? In our experience, all the best mild hot sauces still let the taste of the chilis shine through. With habanero as the second ingredient, this sauce does just that, and has noticeable heat. So while this is in the #2 spot in the Hot Ones Season 17 lineup, it’s a 3/10 in our book. Try it with roasted salmon, steak, rosemary mashed potatoes or even on a bagel with schmear.

Ingredients: White wine vinegar, habanero, garlic, onion, extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, sumac

My Notes

This sauce is actually very good, but I feel it would be best as a chicken wing sauce and I don't eat chicken. I wouldn't want chik'n tenders tossed in it either, the flavor is just a bit too strong to eat passively. Another wax sealed sauce.

Torchbearer Sauces | Headless Horseradish Hot Sauce ⭐️⭐️⭐️⚫️⚫️

The Torchbearer team has a knack for crafting sauces that are outright addictive in terms of flavor and heat with a rich, craveable texture. This sauce features zippy, nostril-tickling horseradish as well as garlic, dry mustard and lemon that cut through the creamy texture and intense ghost pepper heat. Use it as a spread on a steak sandwich or as the best-ever dip for fries.

Ingredients: Horseradish, ghost chili pepper, garlic, canola oil, water, chipotle peppers, lemon juice, distilled white vinegar, dijon mustard, horseradish powder, salt, chili powder, black pepper

My Notes

Spicier than other sauces, it's also thicker due to the horseradish and mustard. The horseradish doesn't seem to come through, or if it does it just presents itself as more heat. The heat lasts quite a while as well. It might be good in a burrito, and now that I think about it I would like to try it on a sandwich.

Keith's | Keith's Burger Sauce ⭐️⭐️⭐️⚫️⚫️

Keith Habersberger (of Try Guys fame) rocked the world of hot sauce with the launch of Keith’s Chicken Sauce in 2019. Now he’s back with a brand new hot sauce guaranteed to light your fire (your mild, tasty fire): Keith’s Burger Sauce! Featuring a flavor-packed blend of smoked serrano and jalapeno peppers, this sauce’s mild heat lights up everything from burgers to veggies and beyond. A combination of maple syrup and figs bring sweet and warming notes, while mustard seed and sun dried tomatoes nod at traditional burger flavors, only with way more depth of deliciousness. Whether you like yours rare, with cheese, smashed or vegetarian, burgers are brought to the next level with Keith’s Burger Sauce. Also FREAKING AMAZING as a salad dressing or steak sauce!

Ingredients: Distilled vinegar, smoked serranos, smoked jalapenos, smoked onions, smoked onion juice, maple syrup, mustard seeds, figs (figs, rice flour), salt, sun dried tomatoes, horseradish, garlic, garlic scapes, black pepper

My Notes

A very watery sauce. It tastes like part of a seasoning for fries. I tried it on a burger and it wasn't that impressive. Maybe it would be good on some grilled vegetables.

Hot sauces I don't like and/or would not buy again

Shaquanda's | Spicier Smoke ⭐️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️

Everyone’s favorite saucy mama is back and she is spicing things up! A hotter version of the original pepper sauce featured in Season 9 of Hot Ones, this recipe packs a punch thanks to added habanero and has a hint of smoke from paprika powder. The heat makes way for bold Caribbean-inspired flavors: a hit of aromatic onion, punchy mustard, and the natural sweetness of the peppers. Try it with sausage, roasted cauliflower, breakfast hash and more.

Ingredients: Onion, white vinegar, habanero, roasted red pepper, lemon juice, sugar, salt, mustard, turmeric, smoked paprika powder

My Notes

Don't remember what I didn't like.

Humble House | Habanero & Aji Amarillo ⭐️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️

Sweet and tangy is the name of the game with this sauce from Humble House! The fruitiness of the habanero is accentuated by mango and papaya with a mild heat on the finish. Delicious for veggie wraps to ceviche to margaritas.

Ingredients: Chile fruit paste (aji amarillo, golden raisins, dried mango, dried papaya, habaneros) apple cider vinegar, cane sugar, kosher salt

My Notes

Don't remember what I didn't like.
