How I Like to Work

How I work

Wie geht es dir?

🌍 When I work

Timezone: CEST

Location: Berlin, Germany

Hours: Between 9am and 7pm M-F (I prefer a 9am start, but it depends on meetings or if there is something urgent.)

After Hours: I have Slack on my phone and will probably see if you ping me!

🖥️ About My Workspace

I primarily work at home but hit up cafes a few times a week.

I do have a toddler running around most of the time. I'm not the primary daytime caregiver, but sometimes you gotta help out 😅

I prefer lots of natural light, windows open (if possible), and maybe music on a stereo or in headphones. quiet is nice too.

🧑‍💻 What I Do

I'm usually pretty heads down for the most part, writing code, trying to reproduce bugs, or responding to HS tickets. I usually spend the first 30 minutes - 1 hour catching up on Slack and taking inventory of what I need to get done for the day.

Because my role is mostly "IC" type work, I prefer to work independantly and have a pretty high level of autonomy for the day to day work and how I get things done. That said, I'm always open to outside ideas and direction.

🎙️ Communication

I usually prefer async communication via Slack but sometimes its hard to beat a sync call to work through something tricky.

I also like to cook or do something hands on during longer, less involved meetings (like SWC). It helps me stay focused and fully absorb all the info.

♻️ Feedback

I'm open and receptive to feedback, good and bad. I do prefer feedback that's direct and given quickly; the sooner I know about something, the sooner I can adjust or we can work through it.

If I'm not getting feedback, I assume all is good. That said, some positive feedback is always nice as a reassurance!

Public is okay for more positive feedback or small, in context things (e.g. I didn't follow a process correctly in a Slack thread and you're just letting me know.) Otherwise, I'd prefer to hash out privately.

🏋️ Things I struggle with

I'm sure there are more, but here are two things that I'm actively working on right now:

  • I can tend to forget or procrastinate random things such as merging PR's or replying to emails. I try to implement little processes to avoid these things, but if I've forgotten or prcrastinated something, you can bump me!
  • Communicating project statuses - sometimes I just forget!

❤️ Things I love

I love making: music, food, software. Pretty classic combination really.

My wife Kat and our daughter, Colette (3 years old).

Being alive: to get out there and experience the world around me.

🦁 Other things to know about me

Daily repetition of what I'm working on and where I'm working at really grates on me after a while. I prefer to change up what I'm working on, where I'm working, etc every few days or weeks to keep myself fully engaged.

I prefer to do work in really intense periods of days or weeks followed by a long chunk of much more chill work. This doesn't really work super well in a company setting as the "hot/cold" nature can be confusing and make me seem unpredictable. That said, I strive to try and even out my energy and output so that I do roughly the same amount each day.
