how to read and post usenet stuff on tilde.town

  1. run "alpine"
  2. press "s" for Setup
  3. press "c" for Configure
  4. arrow down to "NNTP Servers" and hit enter
  5. input "tilde.town" and hit enter
  6. hit "e" for Exit
  7. hit "y" to save configuration change
  8. You should be back at the main menu. Select "Folder list"
  9. You should see "nntp on tilde.town". Select it
  10. press "a" to add a newsgroup. easiest thing is to put in "tilde." and then hit tab a few times.
  11. type in the name of each newsgroup you wish to subscribe to and hit enter (feel free to sub to all of them)
  • to post, select a newsgroup and press "c" and follow prompts
  • to reply, select a message and press "r" and follow prompts

Notes

  • anything not prefixed tilde.town.* is based on tilde.club. We federate our tilde.town.* to them, we get their tilde.club groups back**
  • I am not happy with this experience and will be investigating other clients / how to set them up Automagically for users

I think tin -r on tilde.club is maybe the most newcomer-friendly alternative going, for whatever that's worth.
