Instagram impersonation scam

Some comments on the Instagram scam.

How it works?

Below is how the scam works.

  1. The scammer tries to impersonate with someone else's identity (here, vipul.py) with a similar username (here, vipul.py_____)

  2. They will reach out to the followers and say the following

"I am actually contesting for an ambassadorship influencers program can you please vote for me?"

  3. They will ask you to add some email address to the link they share so that you can register or vote in the program. The link would be basically to your own profile and they would try to add their own email to your account so that they can get control of your account.

  4. If you add the email, they will say to put a code they send. This basically is the verification via an OTP for the new email you just added. This grants access to your account via the scammer's email address.

What next?

  1. Block the user. Any number of underscores after my username is not me. I am vipul.py.
  2. If you have a public account, make it private. I have seen this impersonation scam going on for a lot of public Instagram accounts.
  3. I am not an influencer as much as I want to be looking at how much money they can make :(
