A lot of math grad school is reading books and papers and trying to understand what's going on. The difficulty is that reading math is not like reading a mystery thriller, and it's not even like reading a history book or a New York Times article.
The main issue is that, by the time you get to the frontiers of math, the words to describe the concepts don't really exist yet. Communicating these ideas is a bit like trying to explain a vacuum cleaner to someone who has never seen one, except you're only allowed to use words that are four letters long or shorter.

Idealized commit logs - the best talk IMO. Andrew Shreve shows his approach to better understanding of programs by using technique called program slicing - the idea is to decompose program and its tests in way that every 'commit' contains the smallest part of the code that makes included test pass. This way you get a history of program, which aims at incremental development of understanding. Disclaimer: Please follow this guide being aware of the fact that I'm not an expert regarding the things outlined below, however I made my best attempt. A few people in IRC confirmed it worked for them and the results looked acceptable.
Attention: After following all the steps run gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache
as root, this prevents various gdk-related bugs that have been reported in the last few hours. Symptoms are varied, and for Cinnamon the DE fails to start entirely while for XFCE the icon theme seemingly can't be changed anymore etc.
