Steps for installing ImageMagick-6.8.9 on Debian
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential checkinstall libx11-dev libxext-dev zlib1g-dev libpng12-dev libjpeg-dev libfreetype6-dev libxml2-dev
sudo apt-get install imagemagick
wget http://www.imagemagick.org/download/ImageMagick.tar.gz
tar -xzvf ImageMagick.tar.gz
cd ImageMagick-6.8.9-9
./configure
make
sudo make install

if you get this error:
convert: error while loading shared libraries: libMagickCore-6.Q16.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

run this command:
sudo ldconfig /usr/local/lib

👍 sudo ldconfig /usr/local/lib worked for me after installing ImageMagick-6.9.2-8, thanks!
