panem et circenses

I didn't wanna say a lot during the biden inauguration because a lot of people seemed really thrilled about it and it was a bit like raining on their parade but not gonna lie lxds. The biden inauguration made me uncomfortable. It made me uncomfortable in no small part because of all the people seeming really thrilled about it.

Now, don;'t get me wrong. It was a fine event. lady gaga was there, bojangles of fun all over for sure. it's however also an event that comes of the back of four years of trump in power, literally a week after an armed uprising in the very same building

And thing is, to me, the entire event felt like a really hardcore act of denial? That's over, the inmates aren't running the asylum anymore. The adults are back doing their adult detached things. We can put all of this shameful nonsense behind us.

Now, don't get me wrong. I think that armed uprisings aren't generally desirable. And yet there has been a general vibe, so to say, about the last four years. A vibe that resonates with me. A vibe that donny boy jumped on hardcore even if it was to make the completely opposite point.

Our institutions have failed us. They are not fit for purpose. They were made in an era where power was concentrated, where communication wasn't immediate, where people could not feasibly reach out and organize at scale.

We have felt the full impact of the internet on society hard in the last couple years. We have, as a planet, seen each other in ways that were never possible. Our cultures and values grow ever so tangled. Our fights use the entire world as a stage even when it makes no sense. People can organize a coup or destroy the stock market out of simple boredom.

Very little of what we have built up until this point reflects this. Our existing institutions rely on an order and hierarchy and respect that is fading by the minute. Even more important, our institutions were designed ages ago with compromises in mind, compromises to account for the fact that people connecting at this sheer scale was not possible.

The future of our connected society is extremely exciting. It's also extremely scary. It's a future where a coup at the capitol or the stock market collapsing can happen simply because nobody can stop it. The power is turning and it's becoming more deranged and unrestrained by the minute.

The biden inauguration, with jazzing up a place that looked like a battlefield in a prefect representation of all that just the week before, every detail perfectly on point with the surgical precision of a wedding at a french garden, just feels like it's trying to willfully ignore all of this. To sweep it under literal rugs. It's the existing order covering up it's ears and going LALALALALALA at the reality and the new challenges that we will be facing in 202X
