Storytelling Reflection

Storytelling Reflection

  1. Describe your 3-act arc by answering these three questions in 1-2 paragraphs:
  • Who are you: Consider describing:

    • My values drove me to come to Turing because the social justice mission aligned with why I became a teacher in my previous career. I wanted to support students from all backgrounds to succeed, and worked in Title 1 schools so that I was able to teach the students who needed the extra support the most. By coming to Turing I knew I'd still be able to align my values with this new career path.
    • My Pairin themes are encourager, caregiver, self-confident, and lover of transcendence. I identify strongly with all of these. Being a caregiver, encourager, and self-confident were qualities that led me to a successful teaching career (the whole 2 years of it, anyway). However, being a caregiver was a such a huge role in my life that I was craving to get away from it, and needed to start focusing on taking care of myself more.
    • Through mod1 at Turing I've seen myself grow a lot through understanding that I can always ask for help. At first, I was too scared of being a burden and didn't want to take others time. Through mod1 I've learned that people are truly more than happy to help and that it actually helps them solidify their learning as well when they get to reexplain it to someone. I look forward to helping new mod1 students next month!
  • Why are you here: Consider describing:

    • I've struggled with the same fear of asking for help that I described above. I've dealt with this struggle through continuously seeing others ask for help and allowing that to inspire me to do the same. I've embraced the "when others success, I feel inspired" mentality while here and I know that that will only help me down the line.
    • I've succeeded at Turing in my partner projects as well as with individual study. In my partner projects I was able to be a leader and I learned through both appreciative and coaching feedback ways that I can improve in the future, and the positive ways that I impacted the group, which was very rewarding. I also succeeded with personal discipline for studying. In my undergrad I at times lacked the motivation to study through the weekends and pre-teaching myself before lessons. In mod1 I was very adament about studying as much as I could in order to ensure I felt even slightly prepared going into the lessons or evals.
  • What's next: Consider describing:

    • For now, my vision is focused on my ability to contribute to GirlsWhoCode. I look forward to using what I've learned and my new career to teach and motivate young girls and get them into the tech industry! Once I have done some job shadowing I envision myself having a more clear picture of what type of company and company culture I'd like to pursue.
  1. After you practice storytelling in the session, answer this question: What was particularly easy or difficult about telling your story? What are 1-2 steps that you can take to continue to improve your abilities to tell your story, talk about yourself with ease, and examine your strengths?
  • It was easy in that I decided not to reveal any details of hardships in my read aloud. It was difficult because I've always found it difficult to tell my own story because I would never want to feel like I am self-centered or throwing myself a pity party if it's not all rainbows and butterflies. I would always rather listen to others stories than tell my own, unless I'm very comfortable with the people around me. Steps I can take include refining my story so that it sticks to the point but also allows for vulnerability. I'd like to actually write out my story in a 2-3 short paragraphs like we read in PD. I also think I should ask my previous coworkers and closest friends what they see as my strengths so I can hone in on those more.
