Might have been vmware issue: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2073791

Even if the article says "No resolution will be available for Workstation or Fusion." and this was on an i5 a vmware fusion update to 7.1.1 seems to have fixed this.
