====== Socrates Canaries 2016 ====== ===== International Software Craftsmanship Gathering ===== ==== Gran Canaria, March 10 - 13, 2016 ===

SoCraTes Canaries is a non-profit, international Software Craftsmanship retreat for open-minded craftspeople who strive to improve their craft and the software industry as a whole, organised by the local Software Cratfsmanship comunity in the Canary Islands.

SoCraTes is an Open Space and it's totally community-focused. In an open space there is no agenda and there are no speakers before the event starts. Proposals are presented during the event itself in the mornings, and voted by the participants right after. The agenda is created on the fly. It’s a great opportunity to speak to and code with many like-minded and talented developers in an incredible venue by the beach.

This event is not a hackaton and it's not about a particular technology, a library or a programming language. It's more about methods, practices, values, principles, professionalism. Of course we code during the retreat, hands-on sessions are always part of the event but the focus is not on what we build, it's on how we write it. We meet up to practise deliberately because our daily jobs are not enough to improve our skills.

If you don't know what Software Craftsmanship is, we highly recommend you to read this book to have a better understanding of Socrates. Most of us embrace Extreme Programming as the software development method.

Socrates started in Germany and later in the UK. Having participated in Socrates in the UK, we're now bringing the event to the Canary Islands thanks to the support of our fellow European craftsmen.

The retreat itself is free. The only thing you pay for is the hotel, meals and meeting rooms.

If you need to contact us please send us an email to socracan@gmail.com

==== Departures ==== In order for people to gather and take taxi to the airport, you can write your name and flight code to the wiki.

==== Presentations Resources ==== In order to facilitate the resources that we are using in the talks and workshops it would be great if we share the links (dropbox, Google Drive, etc) in the wiki.

==== Sponsors ==== If you want to sponsor please contact us at socracan@gmail.com

We are proud to count on Adrian Perreau from Agilar as the Open Space facilitator

==== Proposals ==== If you plan to run a talk, a lightning talk, a discussion, a coding exercise or any other activity, please feel free to add it to the wiki.

==== Who is participating ==== Have you bought your ticket? Tell others, write your name in the wiki. ==== Plan your holidays ==== Make the most of your holidays and explore a different Gran Canaria, rather than staying at massive resorts and visiting crowded attractions. We recommend responsible and sustainable holidays.

Important: Public transport does not work well on the island. Just a few bus lines work well compared to big european cities. If you plan to move around, rent a car as soon as possible. It's hard to book a car the day before or the same day and it could be a rip-off. As soon as you book your flight, try to book a car over the internet.

Recommendations
Bring your laptop and cables. Socket adapters will be necessary for people coming from the UK. There will be WIFI on certain areas but not everywhere, if you need to be connected all the time make sure you've got a convenient roaming plan before departure.

==== Organizers and volunteers ==== Can we help you? Please feel free to contact us:
