Update your DIY Trove Exhibition

How to update your DIY Trove exhibition

Have you created an exhibition using the DIY Trove Exhibition builder on GitHub? If so, you might have noticed that it's stopped working. This is because version 1 of the Trove API (which the exhibitions use) was decommissioned recently. Don't worry it's easy to fix – just follow these instructions.

  1. Log on to GitHub and go to the repository containing the code of your exhibition. If you can't remember the name, just browse through the list of repositories in your account.
  2. Click on the scripts folder to open it.
  3. Click on the file that starts with scripts and ends with .js. For example, scripts.fa7195f7.js.
  4. Click on the little pencil icon to open the file for editing.
  5. We're going to delete the complete contents of this file. The easiest way to do this is to right click in the editing box, choose 'Select all', then hit the Delete key.
  6. Switch back to this page.

Some thoughts for a submission to the Australian Academy of the Humanities Future Humanities Workforce Project

Responses to some questions in the Australian Academy of the Humanities Future Humanities Workforce Project's Consultation Paper

What are future knowledge, skills and capabilities that humanities researchers will require?

I tried to unpack a bit what I think of as digital literacy and came up with these dot points:

  • The ability to critically analyse digital tools, collections, services, and interfaces to unpack their assumptions and imagine alternatives.
  • An understanding of the varieties, transformations, possibilities, and limitations of digital data, and the ability to reflect on the technical and ethical challenges of collecting, using, and sharing it.

What can the humanities contribute to the data and digital literacy agenda over the next decade?

Submission to the Tune Review of the National Archives of Australia

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the enduring role of the National Archives of Australia. I first made use of the Archives as a history honours student in 1984, and since then have held a deep appreciation of the richness and significance of the Archives collections. I was employed by the Archives from 2007 to 2009, working on the development of a number of online projects such as 'Mapping Our Anzacs'. Since that time, I have pursued research in the digital humanities, often using the Archives collections to demonstrate what is possible using digital research methodologies. An example of this is provided by my keynote address to the Australian Society of Archivists Annual Conference in 2016.[^1]

I love the Archives collections. They are critical both to democratic accountability and to our understanding of Australian history, politics, and culture. The Archives preserves not only the workings of the Commonwealth government, b
