Telecom Fixed Network Primer — DvSum Team

Telecom Fixed Network — Team Primer

Purpose: A 10-minute read to give every team member a full mental model of the fixed network landscape — from how the network works, to how operators run it, to where data breaks down, and what DvSum is doing about it. Use this as the entry point before diving into product or solution detail.

1. The Big Picture — What Is a Fixed Network?

  • A fixed network delivers broadband internet, video, and voice to homes and businesses over physical infrastructure (cables, fiber) — as opposed to mobile/wireless, which uses radio spectrum
  • The companies that build and operate these networks are called Operators — also referred to as MSOs (Multi-System Operators, e.g. Comcast, Charter, Rogers) or ISPs (Internet Service Providers, e.g. AT&T, Liberty Latin America)
  • Operators own and manage infrastructure from the core network (data centers, backbone) all the way to the subscriber's home — the last stretch is called the Access Network
