A Developer Relations Show focused on the student audience, helping them to figure out a career path in the field. It aims to promote the actual DevRel knowledge to beginners through real-world projects that will be brainstormed on the live stream.

The Campus DevRel Show - Season 2

Thank you for showing interest in speaking as a guest in the #CampusDevRelShow 🔥 on GitHub Education's Twitch Channel! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me at hi@yashovardhan.dev. I'll be happy to answer any of your questions!

What is the goal of this show?

The approach towards DevRel for a beginner is extremely vague. In my journey, the interaction with DevRel folks was the only thing that helped me figure out the Nitty-gritty of getting into it. Our goal is to help redefine that journey, that interaction, that pathway of approaching DevRel for student community leaders, demystifying the myths and vagueness around it. Our aim to help student community leaders find space within the world of software development.

What's new in the second season?

Previously we have gone through the journey and general aspects of Developer Relations, as a guide for students. This helped many of them understand what DevRel actually is and what the day of folks looks like in this industry. We had gone through a variety of topics, but this time we need to dig deeper into the specifics. For each episode, alongside the journey we will be taking one key aspect these guest DevRel professionals excel at and talk about their approach in solving this project in the real world. We will be taking in a sample project in each episode and going through the journey of brainstorming the execution of that project, the ideas one has in their mind, the questions they ask, the way they need to present it.

Who is the audience of the show?

The primary audience of the GitHub Campus TV consists of student developers across the world. From beginners to experienced, student developers worldwide tune in to explore different areas of interest through our various shows. This particular show targets Student Community Leaders and folks interested in DevRel, looking for ways to start. Our awesome GitHub Campus Experts are a perfect example of the audience you can expect there!

What should I expect?

We wish for our guests to keep the session interactive and as impromptu as possible. Our goal is to share your journey with the exciting works you have done and are doing for the community. Here are a few pointers on what you can generally expect the show's flow to look like:

  • Introduction: We'll be recapping what our previous speakers have already talked about while setting up the context of DevRel for folks who have tuned in recently.
  • Speaker Introduction: A small introduction from our side letting folks know about an overview of your journey.
  • Speaker's Journey: We would love to start your story from the school days, talking about your struggles, passion, and what drove you towards your career. We'll be asking you some questions based on what we know about your journey and keeping the session generally interactive.
  • What drove you towards DevRel? This might coincide a lot with the earlier section and might be skipped if we have already covered it. But we'll talk about your passion for this field and what drove you towards it in general.
  • Themed Questions: We might be discussing some questions based on the episode's theme. You can check the email thread where we'll be discussing what might be the best theme you'd prefer for your episode. Basically as mentioned before, we'll try to come up with real world situations where we will be talking about a project and your approach as a DevRel professional around it. This will help our audience have an interesting time understanding how they should approach a particular DevRel project and build upon it.
  • Audience Questions: We'll reserve the last 15 mins for the audience to ask their questions and the follow-ups that we have from our side as well. Being a livestream, we might from time to time also interact with the audience which might mean sometimes answering questions within the stream session as well.

What should I plan for?

Glad you asked this question! You don't need to prepare anything. We want this show to be as spontaneous as possible. Think about how you'd have a conversation with a student and what are the things you'd like them to know. Here are a few things you can touch upon that will highly motivate the audience as well: Letting student community leader know their worth: Many folks face imposter syndrome in the student community. We want them to know that their works do matter and have a significant impact. We would also love for them to find ways to shape their careers in the future with the things they're doing right now.

  • External Advocacy: Making them learn the value of external advocacy and how it can empower their career.
  • Be heavily beginner-focused: DevRel talks generally go a bit overboard in terms of talking terms that a student might not usually be aware of. We would love for you to be as beginner-focused as you can so that the audience can relate to what we're discussing.
  • More focused on Education/ Learning/ Strategy aspect of DevRel: Our audience generally are students from the tech sector. It might be difficult for them to understand the sales focused sections. We will be focusing more on the education, learning and strategic aspects of the DevRel field, helping them know the insights from scratch.
