The 17 percent of workers who deal with erratic scheduling tend to be those who can afford instability the least. That brings up important questions about the role that organized labor can play in efforts to help shift workers. For Americans who work traditional nine-to-five jobs, the life of a worker with a constantly-changing shift schedule can be difficult to fathom. Many workers had one week or less of advanced notice about their upcoming work hours, the study found. For some Macy’s employees in and around New York City who work at unionized stores, shift schedules are set months in advance.

Scientists based out of the University of Alberta have -- for the first time -- imaged a joint cracking in real time, effectively putting to rest a decades-long debate in the process.
"This work provides the first in-vivo demonstration of tribonucleation on a macroscopic scale and as such, provides a new theoretical framework to investigate health outcomes associated with joint cracking," the researchers say. Everyone knows that bending or stretching a joint is what causes it to crack, but what's going on under the skin? When they watched a volunteer's knuckles crack inside an MRI machine in real time, the pop clearly occurred when the bubble formed.
