If you try to type a long sentence with Pinyin keyboard in iOS 10, you'll notice that many common words might be converted into given names of you contacts. It's pretty bothering for that many Chinese given names can have homophones that are used in daily dialogues.
Most Chinese names come with a 1-syllable family name and a 2-syllable given name. Unfortunately “words” in Chinese (Mandarin) are usually in the 2-syllable form as well. By matching Pinyin to those 2-syllable given names breaks a sentence into meaningless context, and can cost you double or tripple time in typing and choosing word-by-word from the word candidates.
The same issues happens to the Zhuyin keyboard, too. But the situation over Zhuyin is not that terrible. Because you usually type in Zhuyin with the tonal marks, that decreases the homophonous misinterpretation.
As a native Chinese user, I sugguest to only match Pinyin to Chinese full names. That can be definitely safer in typing, for there are rarely 3-syllable words in daily dialogue share the same pronounciation with 3-syllable full names. And by matching full name you can still refer a person when typing easily.
