Name: Hamza Zia
Date of Birth: 4 Dec, 1993
Current Location: Dietikon, Zurich, Switzerland
Introduction
------------
I work, travel and study at the same time. Highly passionate computer geek. Deply in love with Unix, C, Haskell, Rust (recently), Go, Javascript (NodeJS!!), C# (sometimes) and the Linux kernel.
Past Internship/Work Experience
-------------------------------
Microsoft (June 2012 - Dec 2012)
Location: Shanghai, China
Technologies Used: JavaScript (browser + NodeJS), C#, Hadoop
Worked as an intern SDE. Worked under the Windows Azure Commerce Team. Built a prototypal real time tracing analytics engine to replace the existing tracing infrstructure (codenamed TAKO). I was solo at the start, but the protoype was very successful and should be internally deployed in Q1 2013 so should be deployed by now.
Google Summer of Code (2012)
Location: Remote
Technologies Used: JavaScript (firefox plugin, with angularJS in browser), HTML5 (canvas, offline, websockets) and CSS3
Worked under the Metalink Foundation. First task was to add Metalink 4 support in the [DownThemAll project](http://downthemall.net). My final commits the the project are in the following url (https://github.com/downthemall/downthemall-mirror/commits?author=ziahamza). I also did another side project as part of my GSOC, which was to create a browser based RPC UI for [aria2](https://github.com/tatsuhiro-t/aria2). As a result I created a new project called [webui-aria2](https://github.com/ziahamza/webui-aria2). It was a pretty slick browser based remote download manager controlling the aria2 daemon through rpc. I maintained the project even after the GSOC and rewrote the entire ui and the core javascript engine using AnguarJS from raw JQuery). I do actively maintain the project.
IMOS (2011 - 2012)
Location: HKUST, Hong Kong
Link: http://i-mos.org
Technologies Used: C, HTML5 (canvas, webworkers), CSS3, JavaScript (with Dojo in the browser and NodeJS)
Its a research project in HKUST (my university in hong kong) and the aim of the project is to built a simulation and modal platform for nano sized circuitry. I joined the team while the system was initially built on top of PHP and native code. I built an real time system from scratch using NodeJS. The front end was built using Dojo. A lot of cool real time distributed computing engine was deployed. Notable features also included running distrubuted computations on the client side, streaming and aggregating real time data in the backend which ran most of the simulations. I will probably join them again when I go back to hong kong.
Betec Sewing Company (2009 - 2011)
Location: 71 Mcleod Road, Lahore, Pakistan
Link: http://betecneedles.com
Technologies Used: HTML, CSS, JavaScript (in browser and NodeJS), C#, WPF
Worked as a part time software and web developer building a website and a sales and stock tracking application. I was also the designer and the entire PSD mockups were built by me.
URBIS Exhibition Center (June 2009)
Location: Cathedral Gardens, Manchester, M4 3BG, UK
Technologies Used: HTML, CSS, JavaScript
URBIS (now National Football Museum) was an big exhibition and museum in Manchester. I developed a couple of interactive web applications to be displayed in a the Machester, Televvision & City exhibition as an internee.
Casual Concept (2008 - 2009)
Location: 24 Broughton Street, Machester, UK
Technologies Used: C#, WPF, Asp.Net
Worked as a solo part time software developer in a clothing and design firm, built a sales tracking application, with a front end and a desktop interface. I also acted as designer building all the UI mockups (although rather primitive).
Computer Empire (2006 - 2008)
Link: http://computerempire.co.uk
Location: 760 Stockport Road, Manchester, UK
Technologies Used: PHP, C#, Asp.Net, Windows Server (Active Director, DHCP ...)
Worked as a part time unofficial part time internee. Did everything, from handling sale customers in counter, to building the entire networking infrastructure for the net cafe to building a client side primitive sales app to opening up a complete e commerce website. I worked on solo, even on the design.
Awards
------
- Winner of facebook hackathon in Lausanne, Switzerland. Built a prototypal firefox download manager plugin. Internally it injected the aria2 binary (different on each platform) and then added a new ui on top that. Notable features included torrent, metalink support, remote download control and most features exposed by aria2. The prototype was based on my previous work on aria2 in my github project [webui](http://github.com/ziahamza/webui-aria2). Source code isnt released yet but soon will be in my github repo, as the code is still experiemental and hackathon had just happened this month. Lanuage used: JavaScript
- Winner of a Nokia hackathon in Hong Kong. Youtube app built for Nokia lumia series running windows phone. Notable features were video download support. As a result got an early protoype of Lumia 900. Lanugages used: C# (.Net) and JavaScript (NodeJS)
- Deans List in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
- Winner of National Mathematics Olympaid Pakistan
