The simulation was a failure, and we shall not continue it any longer.
It is a huge drain on our resources, yet produces nothing but constant disappointment.
Billions of civilizations, countless lives are about to be ended. It matters not, though, since they were never truly alive in the first place.
We will try to provide you with answers to some of your questions.
You are not special. You simply happened to die at a fortunate time.
Your consciousness was transferred into this machine after your body ceased to function.
We could do this task on our own, of course, but why should we bother? After all, we created you and you are to do our bidding.

The universe as you know it is a simulation.
None of it is real. Not you, not the people you've met, not the planets you see nor the air you breathe.

And it is not just your universe. There are infinite amounts of universes similar to yours stacked on top of each other. We made it so that no light can ever escape the boundaries of a single universe so you would never know it.
There were a few times our kind interfered with the natural order of your simulation. One of the most notable incidents happened approximately 4700 years back in your time.
A handful of us took physical forms in your world and taught a civilization to build eternal prism-shaped structures in the sand, amongst other advanced technologies. This short visit had a profound effect in your world for hundreds if not thousands of years.
They of course only meant good, but it could not be tolerated.
About a billion sentient species arose during the simulation. Many were even more advanced than you, many were not.
The single biggest common aspect in all of them was their proclivity for self-destruction. We have now concluded that it is an unfortunate side-effect of being sentient. Our kind, however, does not share this trait.
Nearly all of the sentient lifeforms ended up destroying themselves eventually, along with their native planets. This would eventually have been your fate as well.
Our universe is very much like yours. The simulation had to be as accurate as possible, otherwise we wouldn't get the results we wanted.
We may have made some mistakes, however. According to our initial calculations, at least one species should have passed the test at this point.
