xz-utils backdoor situation (CVE-2024-3094)

FAQ on the xz-utils backdoor (CVE-2024-3094)

This is a living document. Everything in this document is made in good faith of being accurate, but like I just said; we don't yet know everything about what's going on.

Background

On March 29th, 2024, a backdoor was discovered in xz-utils, a suite of software that

Read stm32 firmware binary with openOCD

read-stm32-firmware

OpenOCD scripts for read STM32 firmware binary

Requirements

Linux

OpenOCD (Open On-Chip Debugger) is open-source software that interfaces with a hardware debugger's JTAG port. OpenOCD provides debugging and in-system programming for embedded target devices. OpenOCD provides the ability to flash NAND and NOR FLASH memory devices that are attached to the processor on the target system. Flash programming is supported for external CFI compatible flashes (Intel and AMD/Spansion command set) and several internal flashes (LPC2000, AT91SAM7, STR7x, STR9x, LM3 and STM32x).

OpenOCD was originally developed by Dominic Rath at the University of Applied Sciences Augsburg. The OpenOCD source code is now available through the GNU General Public License (GPL).

OpenVPN with Cloudflared Tunnels - No Port Fowarding - No Static IP - NO DDNS
Task:
Access OpenVPN or any Service on Home Network from Public Networks (Hotel) without configuring router and without static IP
Step 1:
Install OpenVPN on any device connected to Home Network (Raspberry mychoice with pivpn)
- Change default OpenVPN protocol from UDP to TCP (Cloudflare doesn't support UDP)
- Make a note of TCP port number (default is 443)
- Grab the OpenVPN client config file
Step 2:
Install Cloudflared on Raspberry PI
- Create a tunnel

Setup UHD 750 GPU on Intel Rocket Lake processors on Linux

Description

Linux distros don't support newest (May 2021) Rocket Lake GPUs by default. Tested on:

  • Fedora 34
  • Ubuntu 20.04.2.0
  • Ubuntu 21.04

Even if i915 module is loaded (lsmod | grep i915), the graphics is still running in software mode. This issue can be checked in the following ways:

Emulating a Raspberry Pi with QEMU

Emulating a Raspberry Pi with QEMU

Goal: Emulate a Raspberry Pi with QEMU in order to run the Raspbian O/S (based on Debian Linux).

The current setup is not ideal. For one thing, the maximum RAM allowed using the "versatile-pb" firmware is 256 Mb. In addition, only the most basic peripherals, a keyboard and mouse, are supported.

A number of articles have been written on this topic. Most are outdated, and the few recent ones are missing key information.

Configuring the Digispark ATtiny85 board for Arduino IDE and upgrading the bootloader

Configuring the Digispark ATTINY85 board for Arduino IDE and upgrading the bootloader

Warning: this document has to be updated by pointing to https://github.com/SpenceKonde/ATTinyCore

This note describes the configuration of an ATtiny85 based microcontroller development board named Digispark and similar to the Arduino line. It is available in many online marketplaces for roughly 1 dollar (e.g., Ebay, Amazon, AliExpress) and is shipped fully assembled, including a V-USB interface (a software-only implementation of a low-speed USB device for Atmel's AVR microcontrollers). Coding is similar to Arduino: it uses the familiar Arduino IDE and is already provided with a ready-to-use bootloader (
