Since you're using CentOS 5, the default package manager is yum
, not apt-get
. To install a program using it, you'd normally use the following command:
$ sudo yum install <packagename>
However, when trying to install git this way, you'll encounter the following error on CentOS 5:

if you don't know what you're doing withsudo
, especially where Irm
you can severely screw up your system.
There are many reasons which you would want to remove a piece of software such as McAfee, such as not wanting it to hammer your CPU during work hours which seems like primetime for a virus scan.
