I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it has nothing to do with programming – PeeHaa 1 hour ago
Excuse me, but although I AM a programmer, for the past 35 YEARS, and a very experienced one at that, IT TAKES programming to figure this out. So, using apt-get update and apt-get INSTALL doesn't work to fix the problem. SO, excuse, me, but where else can I go to find a solution except the best place on the web for questions. NOT every question MUST deal with PROGRAMMING or perhaps, there "IS" a programming feature I NEED to do, through TERMINAL to "light up" the ethernet port. I AM 54 years old and need a solution. Instead of VOTING to destroy this question, how about we find a solution. – Peter 22 mins ago
BTW, we're ALL programmers here.... perhaps a bit of thinking together, vice VOTING my question OUT the window would be more of a prudent solution, don't you all think? We do that together in a real world work environment. How intelligent would it be if we simply told our managers, "Sorry, but, I'm voting your request out for being irrelevant and not cognitive." Do you really think you'd be employed much longer? So, let's work together, as a team and fix the problem, ok? Please? Don't vote me out, work out a solution. Again, white board it, find the answer and let's do this as a team. – Peter 14 mins ago
I am also a programmer, but I am not as experienced as you sadly. I do know how to properly use the shift key though. And yes every question has to deal with programming no matter how many caps you use. Nor am I particularly interested in your age this is not a traditional dating site. Finally: how about we don't find a solution instead? – PeeHaa 14 mins ago
Excuse me? A dating site? Really? C'mon man. Insults are not required. I added CAPS for emphasis, and not "Yelling". <--Better? Seriously, this question I believe has to do with programming. When using terminal in Ubuntu and like I said, typing apt-get update, then apt-get install, that did not work. So, why is this so difficult to solve? With the knowledge of everyone out here in this community, someone has had to have had the same issue. That's all I'm asking. Look, although my age doesn't really matter, I never referred to Stackoverflow as a "dating" site. I wasn't trying to be coy. – Peter 9 mins ago
I would suggest stepping away from the keyboard for while. You haven't been talking sense since writing your question. Might be the age, but I doubt that – PeeHaa 8 mins ago
May I suggest that everyone calm down and go get some nicotine/caffeine? OP, check that you patch cable has good continuity on pairs 1/2 and 3/6 (usually orange/green pairs), check that the contacts in your NIC/switch in the same positions look good, and make sure that the patch cable is actually wired up right - this sounds like one pair not making good contact to me, and I have fallen foul of all of the above before now. Also @PeeHaa is correct, this question should be on SU/SF (probably SU) as it's not actually about programming. – DaveRandom 4 mins ago
Really? My age? You're serious.... Look, I'm simply trying to reach out to the community for a solution. Why are you continually insulting me? What's the point? I don't know you and have no beef with you. Why can't you intelligently answer the question? Instead you start right off with insults. Yes, I'm older than you and I have made great strides in my experience spanning 3 decades and 1 previous to that in the US Navy. So, stop insulting and perhaps you need to back away if you have nothing intelligent left to say or add to this. I never intended to have this be an argument. – Peter 3 mins ago
AH! Dave.... see, thank you kind sir. That's all I was seeking. I will do that and if your theory is correct, I'll vote in your favor. That wasn't so hard. Again, many thanks and perhaps that's the only reason. Very respectfully, Dave – Peter 1 min ago
