Kaeru WFC connection guide for Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector

Notes:

  • For some people setting DNS settings in the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector properties doesn't seem to work, if that applies to you you may have to set up DNS in the internet-facing connection properties instead.

Connection guide

  1. Set up a virtual machine running Windows XP.

    • Plenty of guides online on how to do this, so I won't be going into too much detail here.
    • I'd recommend using VirtualBox and the "Windows XP Mode" method found here, as all the downloads you need are from official sources: https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/download-windows-xp-for-free-and-legally-straight-from-microsoft-si/. NOTE: Skip the part where it tells you to set up Windows XP Virtual Machine Network Settings, you don't need to do this if the internet connection in your VM is already working.
    • Make sure you install the VirtualBox guest additions CD!
    • Note that Windows XP won't be activated, so it will lock you out after 30 days unless you activate it.
    • If you Google for FF D5 71 D6 8B 6A 8D 6F D5 33 93 FD you may find some info that might be helpful in solving the above problem.
    • If Windows asks for a product key, the common key for Windows XP Mode is K49H2-RPR94-QBGG4-DBCTM-YT64G. You should use this key instead of whatever other key an online guide recommends you to use.
  2. Go to https://www.nintendo.com/consumer/wfc/en_na/customersupport/downloadUSB.jsp and download version 1.07 of the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector software.

    • You may have to do this on your regular machine as the outdated Internet Explorer in Windows XP may not be able to load the website.
    • To transfer the software to your virtual machine, you can enable drag-and-drop by toggling Devices → Drag and Drop → Bidirectional at the top of the VirtualBox window. Then you can simply drag-and-drop the ZIP file into a folder on your VM.
  3. Unpack the ZIP file, find setup.exeand run it. Follow the steps to install the software. (Image)

  4. When the installer asks to plug in the USB Connector, if the USB Connector is not being detected, go to Devices → USB → USB settings at the top of the VirtualBox window. Click the button on the right hand side, with an icon of a USB plug and a green plus, then select the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector from the list and hit OK.

    • If the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector doesn't appear in the list, the host PC may not be detecting it or it may still be busy installing the default drivers for it.

    • If the USB Connector is still not being detected after a while, try unplugging and plugging it in again.

  5. After the software is successfully installed, go to Start → Run..., type in control netconnections and hit OK to open Network Connections. (Image)

  6. You should see several Local Area Connection items. Find the one that's labeled Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector, right-click it and hit Properties. (Image)

    • Make sure the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector is connected in a USB port or it won't show up.

    • If you can't find the right Local Area Connection item, try setting View → Tiles in the Explorer menu bar.

  7. A new window will pop open showing the name of the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector in the Connect using field. Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from the list (don't uncheck it!) and then click Properties. (Image)

  8. Make sure Use the following DNS server address is enabled, then enter 178.62.43.212 as the Preferred DNS server. Leave the Alternate DNS server blank (do not enter 1.1.1.1)! (Image)

  9. All the other settings should already be set up by the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector installer, so just leave everything else as it is and hit OK twice to open all the closed windows.

  10. Restart Windows XP!

  11. After restarting, go to Start → All Programs → Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector → Run Registration Tool (if it's not already running in the system tray).

  12. On your Nintendo DS, go to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection settings menu and press the big blue Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Settings button.

  13. Choose Connect to your Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector.

  14. In Windows XP, look at the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector Registration Tool and see if your DS username pops up. Right-click your username and select Grant permission to connect. You only need to do this the first time you're connecting this Nintendo DS to your Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector.

  15. After the setup is complete, the DS will perform a connection test which should (hopefully) succeed.

  16. You can now exit out of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Settings menu and connect to WFC in your game.

    • In case connection errors occur, try restarting the Nintendo DS system.
  17. From now on you can just boot up your Windows XP virtual machine and plug in the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector whenever you want to go online. Don't use Windows XP to do anything else that involves using the internet, since it's no longer supported.

I keep getting error code 61020 after doing this method... is there a fix for this? I've tried a lot of things and not once have I been able to connect to Wiimmfi.
