Mod 1 Week 4

Habits Reflection:

How have you seen yourself become more aware of your habits?

Have you tried implementing anything new? What have the results been?

Start Where You Are (Empathize with the user – you)

Mod 1 Week 3

Ideas here are adapted from Atomic Habits by James Clear

Habits of a Software Developer

What do you think are the traits of a good software developer? What are they like in the workplace? What would you as a co-worker think of this person?

  • They are open to collaboration, and approach issues with a growth mindset. They are logical when solving a problem and think "what can I learn form this issue?" They are helpful and kind in the workplace, and as a coworker they are helpful and enjoyable to work with.

Mod 1 Week 2

Power of self-reflection

What is challenging about self-reflection?

  • Self reflection is difficult because we have a tough time looking at things we need to do differently. Most people will look at external sources for the cuases of our problems, and it can be difficult to instead admit ownership over our problems.

How can you continue to build the habit of self-reflection at Turing?

  • I can take every project and assessment that we do and take a look at what I learned from it, and what I can do better in the future to not make the same mistakes again.

Mod 1

Week 1

Describe one of your strengths

What is something you have learned to do well (list a skill)?

  • I can lead teams of people and disseminate information effectively.

Mod 0

When you've worked towards a goal in the past, what systems or tools have been helpful for you in accomplishing that goal? How could you adapt those same systems/tools to use while at Turing?

Visualizing my goal is something that has always helped me. It there is a picture that I can look at of that the goal looks like, then I will do that. It not, I will picture myself in the position that I hope to be in. I also like to break down my goals into sections of what I need to do each week and each day to reach that goal.

As you start this new career, what is one of your strengths and how do you know?

One of my strengths is that I am usually a quick learner. When I was in the military I worked hard to understand our work in air control, and although it was a lot of work, I grasped the material quicker than a lot of my peers, and did well in the course.

Pre-work Empathy Intro
1. What role does empathy play in your life and how has it helped you?
I currently supervise a team of 30 remote care agents. Empathy is a big part of my day to day duties, and it is the reason
I have been successful in my role. Many of the agents that I supervise have children, in fact the majority of them do.
They have unique challenges compared to the employees I managed at my last job, who were almost all college students.
My team all work from home, and they can have distractions come up from their children and spouses, and I make a point to
ensure that they know that I am aware that they have busy lives, and that I understand the struggles that they may be facing.
1. How does empathy help you build better software?
Empathy helps to build better software, because there are so many people with so many different struggles, if you only look at
an issue from your perspective, you may be missing the real cause of the issue, and miss out an opportunity to create a really
