Some notes for when I go skiing

My gear

Outside Layer (Third layer)

  • Helmet with face mask and goggles
  • Face Mask cause covid
  • Waterproof Snow jacket
  • Waterproof Snow pants with bib

Second Layer

  • Lightweight rain jacket
  • Water pack
  • Comftorable casual pants
  • Skiing socks

Under layer

  • Underlayer shirt
  • Underlayer pants

Other

  • Skis
  • Pair of Poles
  • Gloves/Mittens
  • Pass (attached to chest jacket pocket zipper)

Putting on gear

At home

  1. Put on underlayers (I prefer to have underwear under my underlayer pants)
  2. Skiing Socks go over underlayer pants
  3. Put on a comftorable casual going outside pants for second layer
  4. Tuck underlayer shirt into second pants layer
  5. Put on a light rain jacket

At the mountain

  1. Put on skiing pants (Make sure the under layers stay down at ankle)
  2. Put on hydration pack (Put the watertube between the bib straps)
  3. Put on skiing jacket (Make sure the under layers stay at your wrist)
  4. Put on gloves/mittens (If it's 2 layers first layer should go over under layer shirt and second layer go over rain jacket)
  5. Put on boots, tightenings are 2 3 3 2
  6. Put on helmet over rainjacket hood. Make sure it's not getting in the way of peripheral vision.
  7. Put pole straps on, hands go into the straps from 'inside' and thumb goes over
  8. Bring phone, lip smacker, walky talky, snack, napkins and wallet
When the weather is too warm
  1. Unzip outer jacket, however much you feel is appropriate
  2. Unzip the inner thigh pants ventilation
  3. Take off helmet and take off rainjacket hood, then put back on helmet without hood underneath or goggles on eyes
  4. If you have inner gloves you should be able to take off outer mittens just fine, but if only one layer the wind will chill your hands quickly
  5. On rare occassions I've even unzipped my rainjacket

C.L.O.V.E.R.S. Acronym for staying safe

  • Exits/Entrances; when exitting or enterring make sure that you don't crash into someone coming from above
  • Restraints; on skis these are built in but on a snowboard make sure that it doesn't just slide off without you
  • Signs; pay attention to and follow sign instructions

Skiing technique

  • Hold poles up at chest level; Steering wheel
  • Lean forward
  • Press against shins as if there's a dollar bill there
  • Look up not at the ground
