- The first census is concluded in China after having begun the year before: final numbers show a population of nearly 60 million in slightly more than 12 million households. The census is one of the most accurate surveys in Chinese history.
- The rule of the Roman Emperor Augustus is renewed for a ten-year period.
- Nicolaus of Damascus, a Greek historian and philosopher, writes the History of the World in 144 books, of which extensive fragments of the first seven books are preserved in quotation in the Constantinian Excerpts.
- Paul the Apostle, writer of much of the New Testament, is born
- Augustus has a busy year. There's a catastrophic fire in Rome; he creates the barracks system vigiles. There's a food shortage; he doubles the people's grain rations, sends away his slaves, and forces the senate into indefinite recess. He sets up a treasury to pay bonuses to retiring legion veterans, which is financed by a 5% tax on inheritances. He dedicates the Temple of Castor and Pollux in Rome to Tiberius. He quashes a pamphletting campaign in Rome, and banishes Agrippa Postumus, one of his adopted sons, to the island of Planasia.
