Morbus
The Morbus is a dimension that lurks next to your Terraria world. A separate, miniscule plane of existence that deviates from the standard convention of thriving.
It is not the perfect place of living. The sky is dark, and the atmosphere is tinted green. The land here is humid, yet arid at the same time. The stone is nigh thick, and weak tools won't be able to break through. All you can see is hills, and a few deep chasms here and there. Perhaps there are things lurking in the distance, waiting for you?
-- TECHNICAL DETAILS & GAMEPLAY --
The Morbus consists of smooth, hilly terrain - unlike the overworld, which is rough and has much more varying heights. The dimension itself is only half the size of a small word, being only 2036 blocks in width and 600 tiles in height.
The cavern layer of the Morbus is also quite different from the overworld's. Each cave has well-defined edges and tends to assume a more rounded shape than the overworld's, while also often connecting to other caves - forming lots of tunnels that the player can dig through (albeit they're typically quite thin). Depending on your luck, you either end up with a small pocket of space, or your cave gets connected to lots of other caves forming a small network - almost the way an ant or worm would build its home.
The surface terrain consists of a top layer of Sombresoil: a dark and green variant of dirt that's not really special other than being infertile for overworld plants to grow on (Morbus' trees require this to grow, however).
Underneath the Sombresoil lies Sombrestone - a greener, shinier version of overworld stone that actually happens to be extremely dense. Prehardmode weapons are not able to break it, but something with the power of a Palladium/Cobalt pickaxe or higher will be able to get through. This means that traversing the cavern layer of the Morbus before the Wall of Flesh is defeated is virtually impossible (although, depending on your luck, a chasm may be kind enough to offer you entrance to a brief pocket space).
This brings me to my next point: chasms. Each Morbus dimension generates with anywhere between 2 - 4 chasms, each separated from one another by a fair distance, meaning you won't find two chasms very close to one another. These chasms are shallow, and usually only scratch the surface of the cavern layer - but if you're lucky, like I said before, you might be able to get through to the top layer briefly if the chasm is deep enough.
During prehardmode, these chasms are necessary to progress. Each chasm contains something known as a Cytra Crystal at the bottom - a green crystal that pulses with light and floats on the air. These crystals serve (maybe various?) functionalities, but in prehardmode, you will need them to advance to the Wall of Flesh. The guide voodoo doll is no longer dropped by demons in hell, rather, you must first craft a clay doll yourself, and then imbue it with a certain material to match it with the guide...
This material is known as Gloom soil - when you surround Cytra Crystals with overworld dirt, it will slowly transform them into a darker blue variant - the Gloom soil. The crystals have an effect radius of 2 blocks - when surrounded by dirt, you'll see some white sparks being emitted to indicate that there's a transformation happening.
Bring the Gloom soil back to the overworld, and smelt it in a furnace to produce Gloom powder. Combine the Gloom powder and the clay doll at an alchemy station to produce a guide voodoo doll - which you will then use to advance to the Wall of Flesh.
