Week 5

Reflect on the module:

  • What have you accomplished this module (do you know what you’re looking for?) What have you learned? Do you need to change anything about your approach? Where are you stuck (have you not been able to follow through on outreach? Is your resume not finished?)

I have accomplished alot this mod, I actually got a phone interview the other day. I've learned your job search can be smoother when you know what your looking for. I have been able to keep in touch with a couple folks I reached out to. My resume is better but I would not say complete because there is always something to update.

Getting unstuck with new strategies:

  • What new things will you try? What will you do differently in your strategy?

I want to try to go to meet ups more, I think adding this to my stratedy will only help make more connections and more companies.

  • When will you have your resume completed? When will you have your portfolio updated on the Turing site? As you plan out your schedule for the week, think of how you'll hold yourself accountable to these goals.

I updated my Turing portfolio last mod, I think my resume will be complete ove the two week break.

Interview Prep:

Pick a successful project and write about it with the STAR method:

Not sure what the star method is, missed this wek due to the protest.

Write about a time you failed and what you learned from that experience:

Being a student a turing was very hard for me, I repeated three mods, you can only emagine the faliure I felt each time. But it made me stronger to go through these classes a second time. Each time I failed I knew exactly how to be better in my craft and what to work on. I think failing is learning.

Write about how you've approached working with a team using a specific example:

In my last project I worked with a team that all had a very different idea than what I in mind. They also had very a very different work style and schedule. I felt the best way to approach the situation was to have a strong dtr. We were able to find a middle ground with each other that ended up working out really well.

What other stories will you prepare to share?

I want to share stories when it comes to working with so many groups and how each time was a different experience.

  • Do some research into your top companies' tech stacks; what do you already know? What can you compare to your own learning? What do you need to learn more about?

I learned that agular and vue are very popular. I learned a little view this mod which will help alot. Seems like every company uses something unique that will be a learning curve.

  • Using this interview prep resource doc, pick out at least 3 resources you will use to prepare for interviews as well as 3 behavioral questions you could practice:

Week 4

Prepare for Job Shadow: AEIOU

  • Activities: what questions do you have about the activities that a software developer does on a daily basis?

I have questions in regards to the flow and of often they have stand ups when working on new projects.

  • Environment: what questions do you have about the overall environment and culture of this workplace?

Is the culture inviting, is the company a strong supporter of a diverse work enviroment. That's really important to me.

  • Interactions: what questions do you have about the team at this company? What do you hope to see in your interactions during the shadow?

Is the team split up into front end and back end or do most developers working on the team do full stack. Are you guys good about helping new employees with learning new tech they are not familiar with.

  • Objects: what questions do you have about the code or the product?

What makes this product valuable to you and your customer base. What langauges or frame works they use.

  • Users: what questions do you have about how the company interacts with their users?

How do you go about testing your user base to see what works and what does not work. Do you create personas to complete this task?

After the Job Shadow, reflect on the same questions; what are your takeaways from the shadow?

  • Activities: what was engaging to the person/people you shadowed?

Yes very engaging, I got alot of good real world advice.

  • Environment: what did you notice about how they talked about the culture and environment of this company?

He works for turing so he talked about how the culture was very outgoing and respectful and that he felt welcome by students and staff alike.

  • Interactions: what did you notice about your interactions with this person/people?

It felt very regualr, I was scared that i would'nt fit it with the culture of coding, but hearing from his experinces and seeing how he was as a person was very reasuring.

  • Objects: what did you learn about their approach to code and/or product development?

I learned that their approach was very simialr to what we learn at turing. Alot of debbuging and refactoring an old code base.

  • Users: what did you learn about their approach to their users?

I'm not sure if we really touched base on this.

  • What are your main takeaways from the shadow? How will you use this information to help you with your job search strategy?

Main take away is take my time and respect my skills so that others will.

Mind Maps:

  • Engagement. Go back to your reflections on when you're engaged in your work at Turing. Pull out an idea that resonates with you most (e.g., "Talking through a problem with a partner," "The moment when I solve a problem that I previously didn't know how to do," "Setting up a successful project management process for my team") and break that idea down into parts and make a list of how you can search for these engaging activities in jobs and companies you're looking at.

  • Energy. Go back to your reflections on when you're most energized in your work at Turing. Pull out an idea that resonates with you most and break that idea down into parts and make a list of how you can search for these engaging activities in jobs and companies you're looking at.

  • Flow. When have you had an experience recently in which you were in a state of flow? You can also think about this as "joy" or "play." Pull out an idea that resonates with you most and break that idea down into parts and make a list of how you can search for these engaging activities in jobs and companies you're looking at. Prototype your next steps: what do these mind maps tell you about what's important to you as a software developer? How could you use this information to adjust how you're looking for jobs?

Outreach & Networking Plan:

  • What company are you exploring this week? Who will you contact from that company? Why that person? How will you contact them? How will you follow up?

I will be looking at Til Ink.

I am going to contact Anthony Sawyer one of their senior Software engineers. I decided him bvecuase we have met before, I've been contacting him through linkdin for a while now.

Execute your plan:

  • Reach out to your contact THIS WEEK. If possible, reach out to more than one person OR find a meetup to attend also. What happened? What did you learn about the company? What other next steps should you take for pursuing this company? Be sure to update this in Huntr.

He replied and we talked for a while and he said that he's a full stack developer and he has done work on everything product related and architecting the backend of the companies products. My next step is to keep it chill, I don't want this contact to think I'm only contatcing them for a job.

Week 3

Reflect on your schedule:

  • How effective were you in sticking to your schedule last week? What were your results? How can you adjust your schedule this week to make it more effective?

I was alot more effective sticking with my schedule, I was able to revamp my resume and update my projects. I also took the time to flush out my linklin and make more connections. I think I can take more time from school work when I can to be a little more productive.

Block out your job search time on your calendar this week. Make note of the set aside PD work time. You specifically need time for:

  • Revising your resume and cover letter

  • Researching contacts at the company you’re applying to

  • Reaching out to that contact

  • Setting up a virtual coffee meeting

  • Resume/Cover Letter Revisions:

  • How will you continue to refine your resume? What next steps will you take to make your cover letter even stronger? When will you submit your application?

I want to have a better layout on my resume that really highlights my skills and projects aas a software developer. Currently my work experience stands out more than I'd like and kind of takes away from my projects.

Outreach & Networking: Next Steps for Application:

  • Take the next steps listed in the slides from this week on outreach. Who will you reach out to from the company? Why that person? How will you reach out? When will you contact them by?

I have been connected with a software engineer who is a big freelancer through my best friend. I have decided to reach out to him because he's a person of color and I wanted to know his experience getting into the job market.

Week 2

Reflections:

  • How effective were you in sticking to your schedule last week? What were your results?

I wasn't very strict to sticking to schedule becuase I had a hard time finding where to start and look.

  • How can you adjust your schedule this week to make it more effective?

Develope a plan moving forward that goes back to my week 1 reflection. I need to rememeber whata I'm looking for and start researching and reaching out.

Block out your job search time on your calendar this week. Make note of the set aside PD work time. You specifically need time for:

  • Building your resume
  • Research into companies/job postings
  • Writing a cover letter for a job posting
  • Build your resume
  • What will you emphasize in your resume that directly relates to your targeted industries?
  • Pick a template from those listed in the Templates section here

Order your content in this way:

  • Header (Name + Software Developer OR Back End Engineer OR Front End Engineer, etc.)
  • Contact info
  • Summary
  • Skills
  • Projects
  • Experience -Education

  • Be prepared to share this cover letter with a small group for peer review in week 3's workshop

Week 1

Add to your vision that you wrote about above:

  • Work is important to me because it gives me a purpose. I get a reason to wake up everday, and something to contribute to that helps or changes lives.

  • I value family over everything else, what matters to me is the connections I have and make through out my journey.

  • My views on work and in life compliment each other through my ability to make connections and being to display my creative side.

  • My work and life views can clash when my job starts to become my life. I try to have a happy balance.

  • I think they drive each other. I believe having a balance in both allows one to succed even further in life in general.

Reflect on how you’ve spent your time in the previous 2 mods to gauge your engagement and energy:

  • I have been the most excited and enjoyed my work most when I am totally invested in my craft.

  • I've felt bored and resless when I feel like nothing will come of the sistuation. It makes me feel stuck and I loose inspiration.

  • I feel energized in my work when I am happy with what I am doing.

  • Energy can be drained by the enviroment if it's a negative experience.

Setting up habits and routines to make time for the job search this module:

  • I have already set up a plan and time frame for working on the job search.

  • I will focus on my resume and cover letters. I also want to priortize using linkdin to make connections.

  • I hope that I can make a couple connections during this week, and I also want to have the company I shadowed with look over my resume.

Applying wayfinding to using job search resources

Mod 3 Journal

  • Please describe the current vision you have for your career. What are the values that will drive your job search? What are your goals for your job search? What kind of role do you see yourself pursuing in your job search?

The current vision I have for my career is building experience to get to my dream job. My dream job would be getting back into the arts from a software developer point. My goals for my job search is to hopefully find something that is familiar but also challenging to help my skills grow in development. I see my self persuing a junior development role that is either full stack or front end.

  • Based on what you wrote above, please write a refined summary statement for your professional story:

I got into software development because I wanted to grow as a person. My last job I was a website admin and through working with developers and seeing their process I got interested in coding. Alot of passion and creativity push their daily work task. I use to dance and coming from that backgroubd I love creating and seeing projects develop from the ground up.

  • Please list the top 3-5 industries and companies you'll pursue in your job search as of right now.

1 Monsters of Hip-Hop 2 entertainemnet 3 Small start up 4 freelance

  • Why did you pick the industries/companies that you listed above? How do they relate to the values and goals you have for yourself in your job search?

I picked the industries above because they aline with my creative/entertainment values. The jobs that I will be looking for will help me get the experience I need.

  • How does your LinkedIn currently reflect your goals and industry interests? What changes will you need to make to your LinkedIn to better reflect these?

I state on my linkdin what I am interested in and my background. I also follow the pages and post articles that relate to what I am interested in.

  • How can you capitalize on the outreach and networking plan you made this module to create new contacts in the industry and/or gain information to help you refine your job search strategy?

I want to reach out to as many turing alums as I can and ask how their experience has been since leaving turing. I think this would be the best way to build a naturaul relationship and get better inbformation to have a more successful job search.
