<Venn-> Someone's just installed Windows 8 in our office ...
<Venn-> One of the secretaries said she's not coming to work tomorrow if Windows 7 isn't back on her machine again
<chiper> 8, not 8.1? | |
<Venn-> and two people went home early
<Venn-> saying they'd bad headaches
<chiper> wait, across the entire office?
<Venn-> yup, very bright IT dept.
<Venn-> A load of people are saying they can no longer use their PCs
<Venn-> and need to go on training courses
<chiper> fucking hell. you don't just deploy that shit overnight
<Venn-> The IT guy's probably going to get fired over it
<Venn-> Basically got no work done today
<Venn-> mostly admin people who just cannot cope with Win 8 at all
<Venn-> and are really really pissed off about it
<Venn-> and the CEO was saying that she had intended to sit on Win 7 until Win 9 fixes the "clusterfuck that is Win 8"
<chiper> how do you even do that kind of update over night?
<Venn-> & that nobody had consulted her on this etc
<Venn-> Well he seems to have worked late and upgraded all the administration people's PCs.
<Venn-> Several people were running around like maniacs trying to downgrade people to Win 7 again
<Venn-> I hadn't actually used it much myself before but it literally reduced the receptionist to tears!
<Twist-> chiper: either you have something in place to push OS images, or you have a small enough user base that you can just hit all the PCs manually
<Venn-> She had no idea WTF was going on with the start button
<Venn-> Unbelievablely bad piece of UI design tbh
<chiper> Twist-: right, but images would blow out everyone's local settings
<chiper> you don't just go through and kill every computer in the company
<Venn-> I can see why Windows 8 isn't popular though
<Twist-> chiper: Are we assuming that dude's competent in every respect except this one? :D
<Venn-> Well this is mistake #2
<Venn-> He advised migrating the whole office to a hosted PBX ...
<chiper> this is basically one person working his ass off to completely destroy the company he works for
<Twist-> Yep. | |
<Venn-> Now it seemed like a great idea.
<Venn-> Except that he didn't factor in issues with the internal network which resulted in the phones going down and sounding like people were speaking on skype through a time warp from 2002.
<chiper> how large is your company?
<Venn-> Not that large.
<Venn-> But that wasn't that big a deal as the old phone system was still in place
<chiper> like, less than 20 people?
<Venn-> about 20 on site and maybe 20+ off site
<Venn-> Fuck! just googled us. She's got his job up on Monster.
<Venn-> already | |
<chiper> heh | |
<Twist-> Hooboy.. | |
<Venn-> He's a bit MS-brainwashed
<Venn-> if that makes sense
<chiper> you'd have to be to think that kind of deployment is san |
